With a passing glance of concern for his current stomach troubles and a small utterance, Jen cluelessly shrugged. [#DDB9B9 [b "Probably just a bug. Been happening a lot 'round here - I watched some kid projectile vomit on the deli window last week."]] A little snicker at the humourous and rather gross memory before actually collecting her bearings and beginning to leave.

[#DDB9B9 [b "Sunday's great by the way - was never into church anyway. It's a date, Nickerson."]] She said in a jokingly sarcastic tone with a mischievous smirk, before ambling out of the kitchen and making her way to the first table insight. She never truly paid attention to the most populated tables - couples were mostly her forte, especially since they were much less hassle.
[hr ]
Alena's fingers weaving 'round his own merely made him curiously quirk a 'brow and actually look her in the eyes with an almost expectant gaze. Had she noticed something else? Ephraim never paid much mind to her 'bouts of affection and compassion unless they benefitted him - and the Lord - in some way. There was simply no need whatsoever, but her love made her willing and credulous...

He seemed deep in thought until an unfamiliar voice sounded in his ears. His eyes looked away from Alena and instead fixed on the waitress standing beside them, clearly pretending to be patient and polite - her body language was way too telling.

[#DDB9B9 [b "Good evening, my name is Jennifer and I will be looking after you two tonight. Are you guys ready to order anything?"]] Said in the fakest, sweetest and hospitable voice Jen could ever muster. Pretending to actually care about the comfort of strangers was never an interest of hers - or a talent.

[right [pic https://i.imgur.com/LRFbfzI.jpg]]Ephraim could sense her fear, not for him or Alena, but for something else. The way she held herself as if there was something innate chewing away inside her. She was hiding something deep...

He turned to Alena with a smile and just nodded his head. The two of them looked exactly like a sweet little couple just enjoying an evening out in the local restaurant. [#910812 [b "Yes. I think I'll go for a simple coffee. What about you, my dear?"]] And Ephraim sounded nothing short of normal and casual. Jen thought nothing of them. But Ephraim was studying her intensively this whole time.

[left [pic https://i.imgur.com/bet8uSZ.gif]] [center [font "Times New Roman" The smirk that Ephraim gave her made her heart skip a beat. She had evidently done well. Her hand turned so she could lace her fingers with his, as they watched Jennifer through the window to the kitchen. She was talking with Travis, their latest aquisition to the list of sacrifices. They had been preparing him for a while now, and he was set for sacrifice on Sunday.

Travis meanwhile just shrugged a shoulder. He could tell that Jen was displeased with Lizzie being home, and he wasn't stupid. ?He knew the bookworm had dropped out, otherwise she wouldn't have bothered to come back. She would be too busy getting her extra credit on.

[right [pic https://i.imgur.com/PxTOqBz.gif]][b [#003975 "Nothing exiting."]] he sighed, slicing into an onion to prep for the next dish. [b [#003975 "Still having some stomach issues, but the doctor couldn't find anything wrong, so I guess I'm gonna have to tough it out a bit longer. I've found some stuff I can keep down, at least."]] He felt bad about not hanging out with Jen as much as he could have- his stomach issues kept him pretty tied. [left [pic https://i.imgur.com/LRFbfzI.jpg]] [font roman Ephraim had been thinking about the next potential targets before his attention was brought onto the young woman rushing into the kitchen. He turned his head to slightly stare at her - a few sideglances here and there at Alena with a pleased smirk to show his current satisfaction.

There were more people within this town who needed to be offered - to be given a new purpose and appease the Lord with their own bodies. This [i Jennifer] was merely one of many - there was another here who seemed applicable and absolute - Ephraim knew all.
[hr ]
Jen had always liked Travis in a sort of subtle way - a little annoying and slightly too aweless, but the company she kept wasn't really much different. He always made work actually worth doing and Jen definitely appreciated that a lot. But she noticed him looking slightly more exhausted and sickly-looking than usual and casually checked over his appearance with her eyes, before actually completely engaging in any conversation with him. She didn't want to worry herself over something really simple - but there was something innately off about him...

She tried to shake that off her mind for now and focus on this instead. With a sardonic chuckle at the greeting and a slight eye-roll at being called [i 'kid'], Jen merely shrugged at the question and sighed. She looked a little conflicted about something and slightly troubled... [#DDB9B9 [b "She's... fine."]] She'd say, sounding slightly brittle and bitter. She chewed on the outside of her lip for a little bit and just lightly grumbled - there was an absolute urge just to explode into a giant rant.

[#DDB9B9 [b "She's home, I guess. Which is good? I dunno. I should be happy and thankful that I have my best friend back - thankful that the [i sausage fest] is over at least. But... I'm not."]] She just shrugged again and exhaled quietly through her lips while leaning back a little on the stove. [#DDB9B9 [b "It's whatever though. I don't really care."]] That was a lie. [#DDB9B9 [b "Just don't tell the [i boys.] Doubt they'd be too happy to hear all of that."]] She trusted Travis enough to actually tell him about all of that - trusted him enough to not actually tell Finn and Myles at least. Her blue-eyes travelled across the room for a little before finally settling on the clock - time to head out and face the music.

[right [pic https://i.imgur.com/WFLwq9Z.jpg]] She didn't want to completely leave Travis behind without at least asking about his condition first and stuck around a little while longer - purposely taking her time to grab her notepad and pen as she prepared to start serving the tables. [#DDB9B9 [b "How you doing by the way? Anything interesting happening in the life of Travis Nickerson? I feel like I only ever see you at work now."]] A mixture of serious, concerned and joking. Jen just really wanted to pry into his current state a little more...

[left [pic https://i.imgur.com/bet8uSZ.gif]] [center [font "Times New Roman" Alena smiled as though he had given her some kind of high praise, and sat back to look over the menu while they waited for Jennifer to show up. She had seen her around, here and a bit in town with two other boys, and she had already seemed affected by the strengthened presence of their lord, making her a good candidate for sacrifice.

She couldn't help her mind wandering back to Ephraim, though, and how he looked when he stared out the window like that. It made her happy to see him across from her. The constant presence of someone had been sorely missed after the passing of her husband. She had been upset about it at first, but eventually she understood. It was [i needed]. Necessary.

When Jennifer came in, Alena gave Ephraim's hand a small squeeze, her eyes following the direction that Jennifer was walking, rather swiftly toward the kitchen. Their target had arrived.

[right [pic https://i.imgur.com/PxTOqBz.gif]]The punk kid known as Travis gave Jen an equally tired smile, looking a little run down. [b [#003975 "Hey kid."]] he greeted, always in the habit of calling her that, even though she wasn't much younger than him. [b [#003975 "Right on time. How's Lizzie?"]] He had remembered her talking about picking up her best friend- Travis actually took a pretty good interest in his friends lives, wanting to make them feel like they at least had one person they could talk to.

[left [pic https://i.imgur.com/LRFbfzI.jpg]] [font roman [b [#910812 "Jennifer..."]] Ephraim quietly muttered beneath his breath as he thoughtfully rubbed his chin. The name was incredibly familiar to him as if someone named Jennifer Adams had entered his life before and left quite a significant mark. Trying to figure her out wasn't too difficult - the memory soon finally popped into his head.

[i Jennifer Adams.] She was in the police records for one simple crime - graffitiing her name on the local playground during her teenage years. Ephraim remembered her well enough. There was always something quite timorous about her - something foreign and unknown. Alena had done brilliantly in scouting her out, as always. Every second she was here she was fulfilling her purpose almost to the brim - but there was something still missing. Something still... [i incomplete.]

[b [#910812 "Yet again you continue to impress me - impress us. We shall see if [i Jennifer] is up to the task and... proceed from there."]] He purred with an almost foreboding smile. Placing his own hand upon hers almost seemed like an afterthought, and Ephraim would soon lean back into his chair and stare out of the window, seemingly deep in thought and subtly uninterested in anything else.
[hr ]
Myles' snarky retort was returned with a sarcastic leer. [#DDB9B9 [b "Whatever."]] Jen scoffed before slouching back into her seat and turning to stare out the window. She spent most of the journey mentally rehearsing her greetings for the customers in the restaurant before work. No matter what, Jen always had to remind herself that politeness was key with strangers, especially when they're giving you their money.

The mere sight of the rundown restaurant alone made Jen lowly grumble with contempt for the place. Countless nights spent there scrubbing tables and wrangling with drunken men - especially when the local sports team were playing on TV. She was half-tempted to ask Myles if the gas station was still hiring - cashier work and pumping gas didn't look too hard...

The beaming bright lights of the restaurant's overly obnoxious sign blaring straight through the windscreen immediately yanked Jen out of her thoughts. Through a stifled yell of resentment and anger, Jen would begin leaving the truck. [#DDB9B9 [b "Thanks for the ride, I guess. Bye."]] And Jen was soon making her way to the backdoors of the restaurant to be further greeted by the delicatessen's sleazy charms.

[right [pic https://i.imgur.com/WFLwq9Z.jpg]] She pushed through the doors and rushed to the kitchen after fixing up her uniform and getting rid of anything unnecessary on-hand, before taking a moment to greet one of the restaurant's line cooks with a deflated smile. Everything about him was admirable.

[b [#910018 "Fear not, darling, I've been doing some scouting of my own. Hence why I suggested this restaurant."]] she assured him, reaching over the table to put her hand on his bravely. She knew how important this was to him. It was important to her as well, just maybe not as important as making him happy was.

[b [#910018 "There's a young woman that works here by the name of Jennifer Adams. I think you'll find she's worth watching for a while."]]

[b [#628a66 "I picked you up exactly when you told me to. If you're late, that's on you."]] Regardless, he pulled out immediately and set on his way to the restaurant. [left [pic https://i.imgur.com/LRFbfzI.jpg]] [font roman The only thing that was important to Ephraim was the Dark Lord himself. Countless years spent devoting his entire life to the entity of pure darkness and life. Nothing had ever crossed his mind asides from him, and nobody could ever change that. But the sight of his one true devotee - [i Alena], always made Ephraim feel slightly happier than usual. She always there, ready and perfect, to offer herself to him and the lord. No questions were ever asked - and when they were - Ephraim would show her exactly how heathens were treated and dealt with amongst the worshippers of the Dark Lord himself. She seemed to revel in the punishment, however. She was [i perfect...]

Tonight, Ephraim was out searching for the next oblation to be sacrificed next to the lord. Someone who... feared him. There was an idea in his mind of who, and Ephraim had come to the only place they'd possibly be at, at this hour - [i Bless This Mess Hall]. What a fitting name for this... offering.

He pushed through the double doors and slowly sauntered towards the table Alena was patiently waiting at. The greeting and the kiss on the cheek made him smirk lightly to himself. She was such a precious little thing... [#910812 [b "Good evening, my dear."]] He might as well appease her. He sat across from her and merely chuckled at the question. [#910812 [b "As usual, boring. You weren't there to make things more interesting for me."]] He chuckled again. [#910812 [b "I tried scouting for our next consort for the lord; the womb, but I have found nothing yet."]] He seemed disappointed at that. This next target was extremely important - the womb was the source of reproduction for the Dark Lord. The lord could not release his offspring into the world without the womb.

He sat back and sighed, before turning his head away to stare out of the window. He was always distant with Alena during these moments - distant but somehow present at the same time as if trying to keep her reeled into him.

[right [pic https://i.imgur.com/WFLwq9Z.jpg]] [font roman It was time to leave this mess behind - this mess meaning the house. Jen had quickly gotten herself ready before Myles arrived outside her home. Her hair was pulled up into a messy bun and her face was completely clean of all impurities, for once. Covered up with a simple bit of make-up to make herself look as presentable as possible. She grabbed the last bits of essentials for the job and quickly rushed downstairs to kiss her mother goodbye, and exit the home to be greeted by the rickety truck parked outside on her driveway.

She really wasn't ready for this night to begin. This job was an absolute endless nightmare at nighttime, but Jen really wanted - and needed - the money. She didn't dare decline the extra hours. She breathed in deeply and rushed over to the truck before hopping into the front next to Myles.

[#DDB9B9 [b "Dude, I swear to god if I'm late... I'm gonna chop your dick off."]] Her hatred for the job was clearly heard in the tone of her voice. She was always this frustrated before a night out waitressing. No warm greetings or soft small talk - Jen just really wanted to get this over and done with now.

[b [#bca1c9 "Oh-"]] and before she could say anything, he was gone. She sighed, staring out after him with her face in her hand. That boy made her absolutely crazy and he had no idea. The thought would be depressing if Lizzie didn't think she was entirely too cowardly to actually tell him in the first place.

After he disappeared from sight, she paid for their food and left, deciding to walk home. It wasn't too far from there, so she took her time, but by the time she set out it was already dark. The once-familiar town now had her on edge, heart pounding as she walked home as quickly as she could without looking stupid. She could swear to god she could see things moving in the trees. Home was a warm and welcome comfort after that. At least her parents weren't mad about her dropping out.

[hr ]
Alena had been sitting in the restaurant for a little while before the bell on the door went off again, and she looked up to see him there. Ephraim. She stood to greet him with a warm smile, and a kiss on the cheek as always then sat back down, trying not to succumb to the feeling of her heart racing. Ephraim was the single most important human being in her life, and it always made her happy to see him.

He took one last bite from his burger before everything on his plate had been completely demolished - nothing left behind apart from a few crumbs and smears of sauce.
