"Official?" Jay asked. He'd never used the word before to describe his relationship status, and it felt even sillier now that the world had ended, but maybe it was these small things they had to hold onto. "Aurora and I... we're together, yeah."
Jack pumped a fist into the air. "Finally!"
Monica let out a small scoff. Scarlett looked at her in disbelief, but said nothing to her. Instead she said, "We all need to keep a close eye on Aurora and her needs."
"Wait, you knew?" Jack asked.
She shrugged. "She had to get it confirmed somehow," she said with a smile.
"Are we forgetting the part where she's spent the beginning of the pregnancy not on speaking terms with the father?" Monica asked.
She was never like this. She was his best friend. "You got somethin' you wanna say?" Jay asked. "Look, Rora and I already talked about all that. None of us are really at the top of our game right now."
Monica looked at her hands and didn't reply. Eventually she just nodded.
Jay had leaned forward to talk to her and the effort of that, plus defending himself was all he could take it seemed. He closed his eyes and gripped the couch's arm. Scarlett rushed forward.
"Whoa, whoa, you alright?"
"I might pass out," he said softly and slowly.
"We should go. Let you get some rest," Jack said and patted Monica's shoulder to get her moving. She got to her feet and left with him as Scarlett and Aurora worked on taking Jay to the bed in the other room.
Aurora was definitely put as ease by his words. She had been concerned that perhaps this was all a bit much for him and he was just too polite to say anything to her. His words were enough though and she leaned into him as much as he leaned into her and and could tell that he needed to rest again. She wished perhaps they had chosen a better time to share the news. Maybe when he was healed more.
Soon enough their small family were making their way into their new home all looking equally as confused although Scarlett less so. She sat up and looked towards the three of them and then her head snapped around to Jay when he so bluntly told them why they were here. She gave him a surprised look for a minute and then Aurora looked towards Monica who had questions but seemingly came to the conclusion all in her own. Aurora blushed a little and looked down at her hands before replying.
"It was complicated then..."
"The day before Kris." Aurora looked up then and could see the look on Monica's face when she remembered how much of an ass Jay had been that day. She shook her head subtly. Now wasn't the time.
"Oh my God! Does that mean you are official?" Jack asked looked just as excited as Harrison.
Jay shook his head as she spoke and opened his eyes slightly. He pulled her hand to press his lips against it.
"I'm terrified," he admitted. "And I'm tired... But. I wouldn't want this any other way." He sighed softly. "I thought I would never heal. But now I know that ain't true."
He leaned against her, his head on her shoulder. He knew the truth now. Love and family were what he needed to get by in this world. They were strengths, not weaknesses.
He let his eyes rest as he leaned against her for a moment until Harrison came back with the others in tow. He hated to ask even more from Aurora, but he was growing weak. He needed to sleep again. It was apparent he wouldn't be doing much of the talking.
He at least tried to get the ball rolling with what remained of his energy after they all filed in, confused. Luckily, Harrison had filled them in on their new living space, but knew to keep the pregnancy a secret so them to tell.
"Aurora's pregnant," he said, though he didn't mean to put it quite so bluntly.
"Wh- what!?" Monica asked, her eyes growing wide. "Wait- whose- Oh my god, Jay." She reached out and covered Harrison's ears. "You two had sex and didn't tell me? You know I'd been cheering for you guys since day one!"
Aurora chuckled as Harrison ran out of the apartment excitedly. She didn't have to worry about him going alone because she knew he was safe in here. Aurora then looked to Jay and she could tell that he was struggling to keep up with all the excitement. She moved towards him and lowered himself on the couch next to him and took hold of his hand.
"I'm sorry. I know all of this is overwhelming for you after everything..." She looked towards him apologetically, the shadow of guilt upon her face as she did. "I know this is complicated and things aren't going to be easy. I can't change any of that."
Jay laughed as he ran back to him. Harrison was an unstoppable force.
Jay shrugged. "I... haven't really thought about it," he said honestly. He didn't really care which it was. In the world before people had their wishes and dreams and why they wanted a boy or a girl, but the world now... It was going to be a miracle just having the baby...
Jay didn't think about that, but it was something he would have to talk to Aurora about. There weren't exactly any hospitals to go to in case of a complication...
"I'm sure we can all settle on a name together. But hey... how about you go grab the others for us? Monica and Jack. And Scarlett, too for good measure."
Harrison seemed excited to hav a job to do and he nodded. He kissed his mom's cheek, hugged Jay once more, then ran from the room.
Jay let his eyes close. He loved Harrison, but at the moment his excitement was almost too much for his injured body and mind to take. He told himself that in a day or two, he'd be begging for Harrison's attention, though. Especially if he managed to let Doc talk him into staying in the infirmary.
Aurora tried to swallow her tears but she knew that Jay would understand that they were happy tears and that she loved that Harrison wanted Jay to be his father. Soon enough he was coming to her for more answers.
"Well, the baby will be here in around six months. I can't know for sure if we are having a boy or a girl until the baby is born. I don't think we have the things we need here to figure that sort of thing out." She ruffled his hair. "You are excitable. We haven't thought about names yet."
He ran back to Jay. "Would you prefer a girl or a boy? We can think of names together."
Jay's heart skipped a beat at Harrison's next question. Then he glanced at Aurora to make sure she was alright with all of this. When he saw the tears in her eyes he knew they were happy ones. He turned back to Harrison and nodded. "I said whatever you want."
Harrison grinned and hugged him even tighter. "I can't wait to be a big brother!" He moved over to his mother then. "When will it come out? Is it a boy or a girl? What's its name?"
Jay couldn't help but grin as Aurora tried her best to answer his questions.
Just watching Harrison's reaction to their news filled Aurora with so much love and joy. She never imagined that she would ever have a man love her the way that Jay seemed to. She never imagined that she would ever have another baby either. Both things seemed to creep up on her and even though she wasn't necessarily fully prepared for a baby in the world that they were in, she was determined to raise this child with Jay and try to create some kind of happiness as a family.
Aurora watched then as Jay held Harrison closer to him so that he could make sure he really understood what this meant for them. Just watching them together like this made her feel very emotional and her emotions were running even higher when Harrison asked if this meant that they would be his dad too.
"Can I call you Dad?" He asked then and Aurora could no longer hold back her tears.
Jay wished he had half the energy that Harrison did. His response to the news was just as he suspected. Off the wall excitement. Jay chuckled softly and exchanged a glance with Aurora.
When he looked back at Harrison, he held out his arms, gesturing for him to come closer to him. He did so and Jay put his hands on his shoulders to steady him and make sure he was taking all of this in.
"Do you understand what this means?" he asked. "About your mom and me? And what we are to each other?"
Jay looked between them and thought for a moment. "Well, you're going to be a mommy and a daddy together. So you're in love?" came his adorable response. Jay couldn't help but smile at that.
"Yeah... Is that okay? That I love your mom? Just like I love you? And like I love this baby?"
Harrison nodded, smiling. "If you're the baby's dad... does that mean you're my dad, too? I mean, I know you're not my real dad, but I wish you were."
The smile fell from Jay's face as he took this in. He suddenly pulled Harrison into another hug. "Whatever you want, kiddo."
"What kind of news? Also, why are we here?" He asked with a hint of excitement and curiosity. Aurora looked to Jay and smiled, sitting next to Harrison so that he was in the middle of them. Aurora took Jay's hand that was resting on the back of the sofa.
"Well we are here because King has given us this place to live."
"Why? What's wrong with our apartment?"
"Nothing is wrong with it. This is just bigger and has room for all of us." She let that news sink in for a moment and then he looked towards Jay with a smile.
"We are going to live together?" He asked, already bouncing in the sofa and Aurora chuckled a little.
"There is more." He calmed down a little and looked towards his mother softly. "Jay and I...we are going to be having a baby." She said as she looked up at Jay and then back down at Harrison who could barely seem to contain his excitement as he jumped off the sofa and ran around the room with his arms.
"I'm going to be a big brother!!! Like Jack!"
Jay closed his eyes when she kissed his cheek. Despite the bruises she still wanted to and that warmed his heart.
As she went to fetch Harrison, he let himself sink back into the sofa. It took long enough he very nearly fell asleep, but opened his eyes when he heard the door.
Harrison came running for him excitedly, jumped on the couch, and took him in his arms. Jay held him close. "Hey, bud. I missed you."
"I missed you, too! They stopped letting me see you after the first time. Every time I wanted to they said you were sleeping."
Jay chuckled and nodded. "Yeah. Well, they were right. I've been doing a lot of that lately. Here, sit down," He said, patting the cushion beside him so that Harrison would calm and sit long enough to listen. "Your mom and I... we have some news." He looked up at Aurora, knowing it should probably come from her. She was his mother after all.
Aurora leaned into Jay easily as he put his arm around her. "Harrison is going to be just as excited as Monica, maybe even more so. I don't think he will even question it either. I think even when we weren't... [I together] he thought we were close." She sighed and looked up at him.
"I'm going to go grab him from under Jack's watchful eye. You stay here, relax and I'll bring him back over and we can explain everything to him together okay?" She kissed his cheek gently and as if out of habit, check that her shirt was baggy enough to not give anything away.
Once she was satisfied she made her way out of the apartment and went towards the cars where she knew she would find Jack and Harrison. "Hey kiddo! Can I borrow you for a little while?"
"Mom!!" He ran towards her and wrapped his arms around her legs. "Can I see Jay?"
"Well if you let me borrow you for a little while I can take you to see Jay."
"Can I go Jack?" He asked as he turned around and Jack chuckled and nodded.
"Course you can little man. I think I'm going to get back to this truck tomorrow anyway. I'll swing by his apartment later to are him."
"Actually, can you maybe gather Monica and Scarlett at the apartment in about an hour?"
"Sure...everything okay?" He asked cautiously but she just nodded. "Alright, see you in about an hour."
Aurora took hold of Harrison's hand and led him back to the apartment where Jay was waiting.
"Where are we going?"
"To see Jay." She said with a mischievous grin and when she arrived at the apartment she pushed the door open and ushered him inside and when he saw Jay he went running towards the couch and jumped up next to him, but then he was really careful about wrapping his arms around him.
Jay chuckled, then coughed at the effort. He looked at her as she sat down and put his free arm around her, tucking her hair behind her ear.
He eventually nodded. "Yeah... I think that's why I need a drink. Monica won't let me hear the end of it. And she'll be far too excited," he said with a grin. "Maybe we should tell Harrison first," he suggested.
He was the only other one being immediately affected by this child. And Jay could imagine how his happiness would turn into bounces of delight. It might be best to let him get it out of his system before they told the others.
It was moments like this that were difficult for him lately. The happy moments. The moments that made him smile. Having been subjected to horrors for far too long, it was as if he was on edge, waiting for the worst to happen. He was trying to let it go...
Aurora nodded and kissed him back just as gently and watched as he made his way over to the sofa. She was glad that they didn't really have a lot of stuff to move over here. The benefits if living light. She had no doubt that Harrison would be excited about their new place too.
Aurora looked to Jay then. "I can get you some water." She said with a smile although she guessed he might have meant something a little stronger. "I don't think we really have anything else. I've not come across a beer around here." Aurora lowered herself next to him and took his hand.
"I think we should tell our family today...about the baby."
Jay only nodded, his eyes downcast. He squeezed her hand. He wished he could think the way she did. Then again, maybe that's why he had her by his side. So say and do the things he could't.
He looked up at her again, his eyes dating between her own. "You're right," he finally said. "We live for now." And he leaned in to kiss her gently. Like it was something they had done a million times.
He dropped his gaze once more when he pulled back. "No use in worryin'."
He pulled away and made it to the couch with a little limp still in his step. He leaned his head back and closed his eyes when he sat down. "Damn, I could use a drink..."
