[great+vibes [center The King of Cresal has finally reached the ripe age of twenty-one - meaning the kingdoms most adored tradition is about the begin: The Queenstrial. Thirty lucky woman between the ages of 17 - 20 are selected, one from each sector of the kingdom, to compete for the king's hand.

The Queenstrial is composed of two major competitions. The first being three months of intense combat where each young woman shows the king and their kingdom exactly how capable they are of protecting the people of Cresal should war break out. During this segment, twenty-five competitors are eliminated - leaving the remaining five to be tested in a far more subtle warfare: that of the King's court.

The second part of the trial takes place within the heart of the kingdom, the home of the royal family. The remaining five move into the castle where they will be expected to partake in studies of etiquette and history. Each week the girls will have to put on a banquet for visiting dignitaries to show how capable they are of hosting members from different cultures. This does however provide the young women with the opportunity to get to know the King.

However, there are is some history that won't be taught - like the real reason magic is outlawed in the kingdom of Cresal. A very well hidden secret of the royal family is a long line of powerful shape-shifters. However, the previous King had been romantically involved with a witch for several years outside of his union to the Queen. When the truth of their endeavors came out, the King promptly ended the affair to save face. This did not end well for the king though, for the witch then placed a curse on the king and all that are descended from him. A curse of an uncontrollable beast that craves blood shed, that takes control at night one week out of the month, to which the only cure is a married forged from reciprocated love.

Having not believed the witch, the king continued on as though nothing happened. But upon the next full moon the king transformed into a monster of nightmares - slaughtering his beloved wife and several innocent servants of the castle. The devastation caused the king to go mad and take his own life.

The loss of both of his parents due to this curse caused the young king to outlaw the use of magic, an offense punishable by death, not knowing that magic is a genetic abnormality. Like his royal bloodline, magic is not something that people acquire - they are born with it, or have it inflicted upon them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Years pass and the mandatory lottery is held for the lucky women selected to take the king's hand in marriage - yet somehow Arabella feels anything but lucky when she is announced as the Aspa Sector's chosen contester. If anything it begins to feel like a curse when she becomes a favorite of the people and makes it into the final round, for she has a secret of her own. And if the king finds out, she could lose her head.
Roleplay Responses
The mention of the letter he had written burns in the pit of Arabella’s stomach. She’s struggling to take control of her emotions, something she really needs in front of the King. How is she supposed to win the affection of a man in control of the nation if she can’t even handle being around him for half an hour? This is going to be the hardest thing Arabella has ever had to do. Though the way he responds to her babbling about flowers piques her interest. Did he just give her permission to go to the garden again? If so, that will make figuring out this whole curse so much simpler, access to the one place that acts as the physical tie to an astral plane created by a very powerful curse.
When they arrive at a seemingly dead-end, Arabella can’t help but be amazed by the sliding wall. Another feeling Arabella is doing her best to conceal. She does her best to focus her attention on the king and his farewell. A pang of sympathy hits her as a result of this, the fact that she knows exactly what its like to play a part in life, her whole life she’s had to smother a part of who she is and what she can do, all because of the man in front of her, and in the last six months it’s been an even more extreme version of that, with her every move being watched she had to be very particular when and where she used her abilities.
Arabella forces her feelings down once again and meets the king’s eyes “I’m glad that you had a chance to just be yourself for a few moments with me, hopefully you’ll continue to feel that way when around me. I would like to get to know the real you, and not just the King. Perhaps we could take a stroll through the garden together again.” Even as the words leave her lips, Arabella is surprised by her forwardness. She knows that she will need to spend time with him in order to stay in the running, at least till she can nullify the curse. She hesitates long enough to get his answer before saying “Thank you again for showing me the way. Until later.” She walks out of the passage way and takes brief moment to figure out where she is. The second she realizes where she is, she briskly walks up the near by flight of stairs the lead right to the princess wing. Thankfully her room is the first room on the hall and she’s able to enter the room without running into anyone else.
The room seems rather normal, nothing seems out of place, aside from the glass doors being slightly ajar. The sheets on the bed are oddly neat though, making Arabella wonder how long she had actually been out in the garden for. She walks over to the double doors and steps out onto the balcony, wanting to see how she managed to get down from the second story balcony and into the garden. Nothing on the balcony itself explains her descent, however when standing at the railing Arabella is able to see the exact spot where she ended up in the garden. There are some vines that are tangled in the railing of the balcony that hang close to the ground, Arabella believes that this is how she actually got down, because surely if she had floated down some one would have seen something.
She does her best to look into the section of the garden she was in, from her perspective no one is there. She rushes into her room and straight into the bathroom. Taking a pair of tweezers into her hand she pricks the tip of her finger the rose pricked. The blood comes out as a normal deep red, and after a quick sigh of relief she draws a small circle on the counter in her blood, followed by a few summoning sigils. She closes her eyes and holds both hands out to the summoning circle “That which drew my blood and bound my soul, I summon thee. Bring thy essence to my presence.”
Her eyes flutter open and the bloomed rose is laying on the counter, the spot where Arabella’s finger was pricked is where the edge of the stem is, burnt through. The sight of the burnt stem is very frightening, because the spell should not have burnt it like that, meaning that her blood burnt the stem. There is a soft knock on the bathroom door causing Arabella to jump. “One second!” She shouts, immediately turning her attention to the rose on the counter. “Encase.” She mutters as quietly as possible, watching as the rose floats into the air and a glass sphere forms around it. She takes the sphere in her hand and turns the water on. She grabs a wash cloth from a small stack and runs it under the water, doing her best to clean the blood off of the sink, before stashing the orb in one of the drawers.
Thankfully she manages to clean it all up, she holds the bloody portion of the rag to her nose and opens the door. Standing in front of her is an unknown maid, staring at her immediately concerned at the site of blood. “Lady Arabella are you alright?” She asks, her voice is very soft and gentle, matching her almost mousey like appearance.
Sarina appears almost out of thin air behind this maid, “Jessica, I will take care of Lady Arabella, please tend to the bedding.” And with that Sarina enters the bathroom and closes the door behind her. “Do you need medical attention my Lady?” She asks, taking the rag from Arabella, running it under the water.
Arabella sighs and almost collapses in relief against the counter, “No I’m fine, just needed to cover up this.” She says opening the drawer to reveal the rose. “I some how ended up in the garden while I was asleep, tangled myself up with something I don’t understand and had a run in with the King. I had to get this because it’s part of it and the blood is from that. My stay here just got a lot more complicated.” She says, rubbing her temple.
“I see” Sarina says, her eyes fixed on the rose for just a moment. She takes the rag over to a basket and drops it inside before turning back to Arabella. “If all is well then we must begin preparing you for the day. You are already aware that the King has returned to the castle, so the morning briefing is going to be short. Breakfast will be held shortly, Carrigan will arrive to guide all of you to the dining hall. From there the King will determine what your days will entail. Starting tomorrow each of you will begin classes, for you they will be a bit more intense than the others due to not having access to the resources as the others. You will need to learn proper manners, etiquette for speaking with other nobles and foreign dignitaries. For now, we must focus on preparing you for the day.” Sarina guides Arabella into a chair before taking out Arabella’s hair and begins brushing out it’s knots.
[Allura [size25 The woman at his side wasn't like the others that remained. Where he had found here this morning had proven that to him. What was hard for the man though was understanding how she had even ended up in the garden. To most it was guarded and very hard even to get into. That was yet another reason why it was his own personal space. A place that seemed to be aligned with his curse. He wasn't afraid of the flowers wilting or becoming ruined. Oh no, what the king really feared was that whoever came into the garden would learn of his curse. Would learn of the secret that he tried so very hard to keep. There was only Carrigan who knew and he trusted the man. Others, Jeremiah would never trust. So many hated him and his reign and would use any means possible to overthrow him. All of that was in mind as he and Arabella made their way through the hidden passage that was only lit by the torches.]]
Every word had been meant."]]][google-font https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Allura][Allura [size25 Why the last words had been spoken, the man could not be sure. It was like they happened to flow off his tongue before he could stop them. He was going to attribute it to having been the wolf the night before and not quite being himself yet. There was no way someone with magic could have gotten this close to him. Surely he would have known. Wouldn't he?]]
[google-font https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Allura]
[Allura [size25 And again the man found his mind was not focused when it should have been. Clearly she had been talking but he had not been listening. Or not fully. [Allura [size25 Getting closer to the end of the long and torch lit corridor, the king went to the wall and pressed a brick, the wall sliding away. The moment the King begins walking, Arabella is beyond grateful, following quietly behind him as he leads her towards temporary freedom. Though it sounds like it will be very brief, she needs to be alone again, to make sure her blood hasn’t been affected by whatever curse she stupidly involved herself with the prior night. She scolds herself mentally as they walk into a long corridor lit only by torches.
After briefly scolding herself, Arabella realizes that she has not once thanked the King for not immediately tossing her out for being the one place she is not allowed.[b [#DAA520 “Thank you by the way. I realized that I hadn’t thanked you for not just kicking me out for breaking the only rule we’ve been told of so far. You were surprisingly reasonable about the whole thing and I really do appreciate that.”]] Arabella says, staring at the floor as they walk, her mind filled with ideas about what kind of curse she’s gotten herself wrapped up in. She can’t believe that she’s involved herself in someone’s curse the first night she’s at the castle. She has no clue who it could be that she’s tied to now, no idea what this curse is going to do to her while she figures out how to break it, or even the faintest idea how she’s going to ensure that she’s here long enough to break it because gods know if she gets too far from the curse holder it could cause catastrophic consequences for her.
Her eyes flitter up, focusing on the King, as it dawns on her how she can stay here until she figures things out. She has to take this whole thing seriously. She has to swallow her hatred for the man before her and try to keep his attention just long enough to break this curse. She has to play with the one fire she wanted to smother, his potential attraction to her. She hasn’t the faintest idea of how to interact with someone to make them like her or to seem appealing to another person. That’s never been her focus. It’s always just been about helping out her parents, being there for the orphan kids, and doing her best to keep her powers as quiet as possible. She’s never even had a first kiss, now she has to convince someone that she can’t stand to think that she wants to be his wife.
The thought alone makes her stomach curl, and it takes all of her willpower to prevent her face from reaching in disgust.
[b [#DAA520 “I can understand why the garden is off-limits though”]] More than she will actually tell him, given his distaste for magic and the whole place is the physical point of a curse, [b [#DAA520 “It’s so beautiful in there, and there are so many different flowers in there, too many people and I know that some flowers are so fragile that too much attention will cause them to wilt. My mom has a few of those in her studio, and it’s just her me and my dad that can go in there, no guests allowed. I imagine with the contest and so many different moving parts it’s just easier to keep it off-limits to everyone than to just limit it to a select few.”]] Arabella says, causing the curling in her stomach to change from disgust to homesickness. She can’t help the surge of jealousy she feels for the other contestants.
After their time on the island, all of the remaining contestants were brought to the capital city for the few weeks leading up to them being moved into the castle. They stayed at a high-end hotel and were taken on some kind of victory lap across the media. As the rest of the girls are nobles, their families were able to come and stay in the capital and spend time with the rest of their families and relax in a time of recovery. Arabella did even get a chance to hear her family’s voices since they are far from what any of these people know as normal. She’d give anything to be able to just hear their voices again.
The thoughts take her so far from the conversation she's attempting to have with the man she now has to impress.
[Allura [size25 The morning had left the man with a foggy head and disoriented as it seemed always happened after a full moon. It took him a moment to adjust to the dimly lit chamber. And when he had, Jeremiah as always was appalled by the boned and blood that littered the room. He knew it would be cleaned but it did nothong the clear the shame that settled upon him. The ONLY comfort he could find was that he could not control the beast inside BUT had hurt those who had deserved it and NOT an innocent soul.
Those thoughts bounced around and around as he found rhe extra set of clothes that had been stored for him, simple tanned breeches, white cuffed shirr, and boots. As quickly was humanly possible was the man dressed and finding his way through ghe passage that would take him to the garden, his safe haven. Upon getting to the gazebo as that was his favourite spot he came across a young woman who appeared to be asleep.. The finalist known as Arabella. And he woke her, dark gaze upon her afger he had shaken her gently and her gaze soon locked upon him.]
[Allura [size25 [b "What brings you out here? And did not Carrigan explain this place?"] The man asked quietly. His head was still aching and he still wasn't fully him. But he was mostly controlled. He wasn't angry but more in a state of shock to even see anyone in his safe place.]]]
[Allura [size25 Arabella can't help but go wide-eyed at the sight of him. She quickly stands up and pulls her robe closed tightly around her. She tries to come up with an excuse, something realistic, something other than she was pulled out here via a magical siren related to some unknown curse she unintentionally got herself involved in. [b "I'm very sorry, your grace. I must have slept walked out here. I don't know exactly where I am actually. What day is it? And it has only been a day...The business ended early and I was able to make it back. Though I do ask that you not tell the others...As I plan to meet with all of you the day after tomorrow.."] His words were quiet as he touched the vines on the white of the gazebo.]]
[google-font https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Allura]
[Allura [size25 Hearing that it's only been a day Arabella sighs in relief, and can't help the small chuckle that bubbles up at the thought of keeping a secret for the King. She'll do it, only because she knows that if she doesn't he isn't likely to overlook the fact that she's in the only area that they've been restricted from. She slightly nods, and further pulls the silk robe around her, feeling the chill of the early morning breeze blowing over her. [b "Good to know, I'll keep your return to the castle a secret."] she says, forcing herself to look everywhere but directly at the King. Her eyes land on a vibrant red rose that is twice the size of a regular rose [b "Is this the famous Cresal Rose? It really is far larger than a regular one. I can understand why people love it so much. I always imagined that it was redder like a standard red rose, these are more blood red."] She says, thinking aloud mostly. It takes a split second for her to realize that the coloration is probably linked to the dream she was having moments before and she wishes that she had talked about literally anything else.]]
[google-font https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Allura]
[Allura [size25
He was very much aware of how amusing this sounded. The king was asking her to keep a secret for him. So when the chuckle escaped, Jeremiah shook his head and was ALMOST going to demand it be kept. Only way he knew how to make sure it was. Either that or hold the matter of her being in the ONE place that she and the others were not to be over her head. It was more necessity and safety reasons. But he very well couldn't tell her that. The garden was the one place the wolf was completely at peace and more like a puppy if anything. And it was also the only place he himself was free to be Jeremiah and NOT the king. [b "Thank you for agreeing to keep it.. Last thing I need is for any of this to get out.."] He said, offering an almost timid smile.
Jermiah noted that the young woman, Arabella would not look at him. But she did notice the vibrant red rose that was twice the size of the normal rose. The symbol of his curse and that of his family. That rose was another reason that none were permitted into the gardens without him. [b "The biggest and most beautiful of the roses you will see in this garden.. Perhaps in the entire kingdom. Yes, these are more blood red...a reminder that blood runs thicker than water..and it is one thing you are bound by.. [Allura [size25 Arabella is shocked by his offer to escort her back to prevent her from getting into trouble, so shocked that she carelessly pricks her finger on one of the thorns. She winces and instinctively puts her finger in her mouth, a habit she can almost hear her mother scolding her over. [b “Perhaps that would be for the best.”] She says, doing her best to seem unphased by the terror that racks through her at the sight of the small black specks that are on the thorn. She turns her entire body towards the king, indicating that she’s fully ready to follow him out of the garden. She pulls down the silk sleeve of her sheer robe, suddenly realizing just how exposed she is in front of the king. She has never been this exposed in front of any man. A deep blush begins to grow on her cheeks as a result.
She crosses her arms, unintentionally amplifying the appearance of her chest. The flimsy nightgown clings to her frame, showing off her curves in a way she is certainly not accustomed to. She feels a mix of anger and embarrassment at the state of dress she is currently in. She had never really spent any time thinking about being this indecent in front of another person before, but even what little thought she had put into it, she never would have imagined that the first person that would see her this exposed would be The Monster King.
She dares to meet his eyes, praying to all the gods that he will take her back to her room now.]]
And he could not take them back as that would be in the words of Carrigan, 'Disgraceful'. Do as it stood, Jeremiah would have to wait to see if she would accept or decline the offer. Deep down, the man hoped it would be declined and he could be alone. But then, there was also a part of him that was..happy? at the prospect of taking her back to her room. Curious, but he made no mention. Or at least not to her. He would however to Carrigan later. Her crossed arms also had not been lost on him and he had not been able to stop himself from habing a wandering eye. She was...a beauty. He would give that to her. And soon he was silent again as he walked before her and towards the passage he mentioned, the long corridor being lit with torches. It would come out in the palace's library which was just down the hall and up a flight of stairs from the room that was hers for the time being.]
[great+vibes [center Arabella stops eating the appetizers in front of her as she reads and rereads the letter. She knows that the letter is supposed to act as the first line of communication, that she should write something back. She imagines the others reading their letters over dinner, requesting that their chambermaids bring them paper and pen to try and reply so that when the King returns, he returns with a response to his [i kind] words. However, all it does is enrage Arabella. She pushes her chair back and walks over to the fire pit, tossing the letter in and watching it turn to ash. She isn’t just angry at the King for his letter, but at herself, because she can’t honestly say that what he said is even remotely true. She didn’t take a stand for what she believes. Sure, she managed to save a few girls, but when it really mattered, when she had the chance to stand up for another witch, to save her, to stop her execution, to try and escape, she just stood there. Her hands are covered in blood.
She ignores the food on the table and heads back inside. She just wants the night to be over. She wants this entire nightmare to be over. But she’s locked in this cage until the King either has her executed or sets her free. Sorina walks out of the closet holding pajamas for her [#8B4513 “Given the conversation you were having prior to trying to eat I thought it wise to prepare your night clothes in case you had a negative reaction to the letter. Would you like a bath first, or would you like to simply change for bed now?”] She asks, slowly approaching Arabella.
[#DAA520 “A bath would be nice. I want to get all of this stuff off of me.”] She says, gesturing to the entire get-up she’s wearing. Sorina simply nods and guides Arabella into the door closest to her. Entering the room reveals a vast and elegant bathroom practically covered in marble Sorina guides Arabella to the simple gray chair and has her sit down before beginning to run water for her bath. Once the water is at a temperature that Sorina approves of, she turns her attention to Arabella and begins to assist with removing the make-up on her face and removing the gown, leaving Arabella in nothing but the slip. With her face clear of make-up and the elegant gown set to the side, Arabella picks up a hairbrush and does her best to brush out the curls, only managing to make them far poofier than before. At this point, the tub is ready for Arabella to climb into, and Sorina leaves the room after briefly advising her where the towels are.
Arabella takes a brief bath, not wanting to risk getting too used to the warm water given that when she returns home it’ll be nothing but the lukewarm water. She dries herself off with the softest towel she has ever felt in her entire life. She groans into the towel, upset that she likes the plush material. It would be so much easier for her if the comforts of the castle weren’t so tempting. She picks up the pajamas laid out for her and finds that it is a lilac silk nightgown that will go down to her feet, paired with a white silk robe that also stops at her feet. She pulls both on, feeling a bit uncomfortable by how the material clings to her chest and amplifies the size. She leaves the bathroom and finds her bedroom empty and her bed prepared for her to crawl in.
She crawls into the plush bed, feeling like she is crawling onto a cloud with how soft it is. She tries to settle down into it, wanting sleep to come to her, but she can’t get comfortable. The bed is far too soft, she imagines that the other girls will be thrilled by the comfort after half a year of having to sleep on the ground, but Arabella has never had the opportunity to sleep on something super soft. She has a bed at home, but it’s old and all the foam has melded into a hard surface. She sits up in bed and looks around the room, trying to find an alternative spot to sleep. She settles on the love seat before the fireplace. She pulls the plush comforter off of the bed and moves over to the love seat, finding the firm plush much easier to fall asleep on than the bed itself.
Arabella wakes up, or rather she believes she wakes up. She’s still in her room, but it’s different. The fire is completely out, and everything has an eerily silver hue to it. She pushes the comforter off of herself and stands up, walking towards the glass double doors to her balcony as though she is being pulled towards it. She pulls the double doors open to find that the silver hue extends to everything and that it’s being caused by the full moon, which is far bigger than it should be. The moon takes up the majority of the sky and is so bright that the stars are drowned out.
Arabella can hear an odd melody, it’s a woman’s voice, slightly off-key, and raspy. The melody is what’s pulling Arabella out of her room, and onto the balcony. The world is covered in snow, and the garden below is dead and overgrown with thorns. She knows she has to go further, she steps up onto the chair, and then the table, before finally reaching the railing of the balcony. She doesn’t understand how, but she knows that she won’t get hurt if she steps off of the balcony, which is exactly what she does.
She takes a step off of the balcony and begins floating forward at a slight decline. Rather than landing on the ground, she lands on water. She looks around to find that she’s in an empty space, filled with nothing but a watery surface and a single blue rose floating above an iron table. The closer that she gets to the rose, the louder the singing becomes, to the point that it hurts Arabella’s eardrums. She has the urge to cover her ears and almost does so, but as she does so she begins to sink. She isn’t sure exactly what’s going on, but she knows that it’s part of a curse, a curse that will swallow her whole if she doesn’t push past the pain.
She puts her arms at her side and forces herself forward, doing her best to ignore the piercing sound threatening her. When she reaches the side of the table all sound stops, leaving her standing beside the table with nothing more than a ringing in her ears. She looks around to find that she is still alone. Taking a deep breath, she reaches up and touches the stem of the rose, pricking her finger on a thorn. The moment her blood touches the rose, the petals of the rose change from the midnight blue to a vibrant red.
This is shortly followed by Arabella being lifted into the air with the same musical tone as before, but softer and in key. Her voice sounds like velvet, and the sound comes out in the physical form of a violet mist being pulled from Arabella’s agape mouth. She floats in the air with her arms stretched out slightly at her sides, the mist flows around her and throughout the area, slowly revealing the thorny garden. While it reveals the garden, it does not restore it. Instead, Arabella is standing before a gazebo, in the gazebo itself is a man with tattered clothes and scratched up skin. For a moment Arabella doesn’t recognize him, but just as she is about to reach out and touch him, she is shaken awake by someone else. Quickly looking around she finds herself still in the garden, only this garden is filled with life, and she’s the one asleep in the gazebo, laying on the bench surrounded by lush plants. She looks up to see who woke her up to find herself face to face with the King himself.
The fool who brought the curse upon them all. And the one who overly had made Jeremiah choose to put a ban on magic. Made him hate it and execute ANY and ALL who practiced. Now deep down the young king knew that it was not fair to blame ALL for what ONE did. But it had been the one that made him lose everyone and thing that he had ever held dear. So why not hold the grudge and rid the world of the evils? At least that was how Jeremiah saw it. Many a time, Carrigan had tried to talk sense into him, but it never worked. [Allura [size20 [b 'Miss Arabella,
The realm and I have been watching you and all the others who were sent to the island the whole time. The tasks were not intended to be easy by any means. A test of wit, will and strength was part of it. But the other part was to test your knowledge in survival as well as doing what you thought was right. Taking a stand for what you believed in and holding to your beliefs even when others did not share them. Through it all, you proved the quickest in wit but also the bravest and gentlest in heart. A true and compassionate leader and one I can truly admit to admiring. Among all the young ladies you continued to put yourself in harms way in order to make sure that another may be safe. Not many, even here at court would make such personal sacrifices. Again and again you shone as the brightest star. Captured not only my attention, but the attention of all realms. You proved yourself a fine and capable queen on the island and making it this far. Now I look forward to meeting you and seeing how you fair here at court.
Best wishes,
Jeremiah]]
[Allura [size20 His thoughts were slowly getting darker after his thoughts of the letter he had written for one of the contestants. Well they all had similar letters but the one his mind went to was slightly more personal. And the darker his thoughts were becoming, the more wild his mind. A sign that the change was coming and coming quick. So he went to the wall and pulled down on what used to be an old torch's holder and watched as the wall opened. Watched as the stairway into utter darkness and into the dungeons down below was exposed. It was his only way to escape. His only way to torture and to kill without questions asked. For every full moon or days just before, criminals, the worst of the worst were brought into the inner walls and never seen or heard from again. The reason, the werewolf, the monster in him completely mutilated them. Ripped them to shreds and then had their bones as his own personal chew toys. Or at least that was what he was told happened. [great+vibes [center The entire time they’ve been talking, Carrigan had been weaving them through the castle not expressing where they were going or what they were passing. Before they know it, Carrigan is coming to a halt in front of a set of grand double doors that are covered with intricate carvings or lilies on them with two women on the right and three on the left, all of which are dressed in simple black dresses with a white apron tied around their waists and white gloves on their hands. Before another question could be asked, each of the women approaches one of the contestants, giving a short curtsey before introducing themselves.
Arabella is very surprised by the elegance of the woman before her. She has a short blonde bob and angular features causing her brown eyes to be fierce. Her curtsey is far more flawless than Arabella could ever hope to be. [#8B4513 “My lady, it’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Sorina, I will be your head chambermaid and will be leading you the rest of the way to your chambers.”] And with that Sorina turns on her heels and goes to one of the double doors and pulls it open while the other one is being pulled open by a more timid woman with a simple red braid running down her back and her ivory skin covered with a massive amount of freckles.
Once the double doors are open, all of the contestants are ushered into the tower by the remaining chambermaids. Immediately they are directed to their rooms, each one is directed to a door at one of the five remaining walls, with a spiral staircase leading up to the unknown. Arabella is directed to a wooden door with an intricate carving of morning glory, getting one a few seconds of looking at the details before being ushered inside, almost as if it’s within a certain urgency.
The first thing that Arabella sees it the night sky, the brilliant full moon seems massive from the castle, staring right through the glass doors that lead out to a balcony. The sight is incredibly breathtaking and almost completely distracts Arabella. But once she looks around the room, her breath truly is taken.
It’s like walking into a fairytale.
The floor is a dark brown wooden floor that is covered with lush green rugs around the bed, vanity, and fireplace. The four-poster bed is made of twisted woods, taking on the form of if thin trees grew together to hold the bed, and morning glory intertwines with the branches. The bed itself is massive, larger than Arabella even realized a bed could be. The rest of the furniture is done in a similar whimsical structure, all appearing to be made from this twisted wood. Ivy appears to be climbing the walls as if this whole room were simply a room created from the earth itself. She is too shocked to move out of the doorway.
Though the sudden appearance of Mystic, her tailor for her participation in the competition, drags her out of her shock. Mystic walks out of one of the two doors on either side of the fireplace and lights up the moment their eyes land on Arabella.
[#8B008B “Arie! How did it go? Was the King not there?”] they ask, rushing over and grabbing the heels from Arie’s hand and hands them to Sorina, who disappears through the other door beside the fireplace. Mystic practically drags Arabella over to the two plush sitting chairs in front of the fireplace.
Arabella is a bit surprised to see Mystic but does her best to respond to them. [#DAA520 “I have no idea how it went, but thankfully he wasn’t there. When they said he would be gone on urgent business, I can’t lie, I refused to believe that I got that lucky, but he wasn’t there. Supposedly he might not be back for a few days.”] Arabella says, trying to register what that means herself.
[#8B008B “Oh, come on now, you can’t still be like that, can you? I know you’ve got to see the opportunity that you’ve got being here.”] Mystic says pausing only as Sorina brings them a cup of tea. They take a quick drink, their eyes rolling back in bliss at the taste, before continuing. [#8B008B “Yes, I know, you can’t stand the king, but being here isn’t just about the king, but it’s about you. The connections you can make are insane. You’ll be meeting so many nobles, foreign diplomats, you will have access to things you couldn’t even imagine. Take advantage of it, sure you have to interact with a few misguided people, but with these kinds of resources you could get a study to prove that magic is a genetic thing, you could be the revolution our people need.”] Arabella gasps, looking terrified at Sorina since Mystic is openly talking about magic in front of her. [#8B008B “Oh, don’t worry about Sorie, us tailors were able to pick what chambermaid we wanted to work with, and Sorie and I go way back. Believe it or not, Sorie uses to get into all sorts of trouble with me.”] They say winking at Sorina while patting Arabella’s hand.
[#DAA520 “Oh okay, that’s good to know at least, umm yeah, I realized that, but even if I have those kinds of resources, wouldn’t it seem a bit obvious that someone from a very well hidden village that’s practically disconnected from the rest of the nation petitions for the liberation of witches?”] Arabella is hesitant to talk about this, but Mystic is the only person she truly trusts here, so she knows that if she can’t confide in them, then the rest of her time here will lead her to extreme paranoia.
Before Mystic can speak again, Sorina appears beside Arabella before she aggressively clears her throat. [#8B4513 “While this is all incredibly fascinating, now is not the time to be discussing overthrowing the King. Lady Arabella needs to prepare for her evening, starting with her dinner. As the first dinner in the palace is traditionally held as a banquet celebration and his majesty is currently tending to some urgent business, he has arranged for you to have dinner on the balcony overlooking the beautiful gardens of the castle. While you are not allowed to enter the garden proper, his majesty hopes you enjoy the view.”] Sorina is very monotone when she speaks, but the moment she is done she walks over to the double doors and opens them. The balcony is a white marble with a similar guardrail, with simple wicker furniture adorning it, as well as tall vases of pink roses, which tie into the furniture because of the matching cushions and decorations. There is a table set up with several covered plates and just as many forks as well as a letter in an unfamiliar script. She sits down, her bare feet against the chilled marble, a fire roaring in an outdoor firepit keeping her warm. Though it doesn’t add much to the lighting provided by the brilliant glow of the moon. Sorina removes the first lid and gives brief instructions for proper table etiquette before stepping back into the shadows. After Arabella takes the first few bites of her food, she turns over the envelope to find the royal seal. As the letter is addressed to her Arabella opens the letter to find that it’s a handwritten letter from the king.
The sparkle in the older man's eyes met with Haven's. She was the only of the young ladies to not be at all affected by his words. But it helped that she and he both knew something that the rest did not. She without the knowing of all the rest had been the one to help him come up with this competition and way to save the king from the curse that had been first inflicted upon the king before. Of course the man did not tell Jeremiah who had helped him, just that he had had a hand in finding a way to break the curse that plagued him. Not that he would let that be known to any. It was agreed that the two of them would keep the secret well guarded and that in this way she may get to better connect with the young king. Befriend him if one may call it that.
Dark eyes again scanned over the young ladies as he took them in. Each seemed different than when they started. Some indifferent, some lighter, some keeping to who they had been.. But it had again been Arabella, the "dear" child in his mind who caught his attention yet again. For it appeared to him that there was a coldness in those eyes and a great form of determination. Definitely different than the other four. Whether that was good or not would remain to be seen.
Snapped from his thoughta, the elder man gave the faintest shakes of his head and yet again was offering a smile. [#f33a30 "Of course. It is my dury to be of help to all of you and to serve the king. But I do have to apologise, my dear. For I cannot tell you what he is like. That was the one thing he bid me not to. It would ruin the 'game' as he had said...and he would so very like to get to know each of you in turn. Keep the fields even and learn at the same time."] Came soft words. It was as if he had had to learn those words. Which he had, but he would have said them regardless. There was only so much he was able to do and to say.
[#f33a30 "I do hope that I was able to be of some assistance to you all. If there is anything more I can do, do not be afraid to ask."] And as generic as he was sure the words to sound, Carrigan did at least mean them. He did want one of them to win. Wanted one of them to help save the king, the man he very much thought of like a son from himself and his curse before it was too late.
Questions. They always did come when the gates opened, and no king was there. Carrigan was very used to this by now and do did glance back over his shoulder at the young women, a faint smile upon thin lips. [#f33a30 "He shall be around in the next day or so. But he has asked me to see to all of you while he attends business."] The lie slipped so very easily from the older man's lips as he continued to lead them through the gates and soon into a foyer where he motioned to yet another door. [#f33a30 "Are there any other questions you would like to ask my dears?"]
~
Due to the last 6 months on the island, Jocelynn's already slender frame is even more so, with just enough muscle left to make her runway worthy. The gold threading on her dress reflects the fire of her hair. She manages to keep up the pace the Hand sets without any issue, clearly unphased by the added height from their heels. [#f08080 "Traditionally the King gives a tour of the castle and then there is a ball held in honor of the conclusion of the first part of the trial. Due to the responsibilities the King must handle, how does that alter our introduction to the palace?"]
~
The young woman's question was a good one. One that the man had not anticipated. But yet again, they had the right to ask questions and he was the play the good host until Jeremiah was able. [#f33a30 "It only pushes the introduction and ball back a little. But it will be made up. The king is good to his word, my lady."] Carrigan said, answering the question again with ease.
~
Arabella is following behind the rest of the contestants, already feeling a strong disinterest in anything having to do with the King. [i [#DAA520 "Just make it through and survive, any time will be a good time for him to send me home. So, there's no point in caring about this stuff."]] She tells herself, instead looking around at the beautiful scenery from the gate to the castle, also taking in the details on the castle, marveling at how such a thing could still be standing. While Arabella is distracted from the conversation, another contestant speaks up.
With her golden hair falling around her Mae is all the more striking in the late night sun. The black gown causes the warm undertones of her skin to truly pop. She is the most well-known contestant, as she is a famous actress who has already won several awards for her performances. She is also towards the front of the group, seemingly unphased by the height of her heels or the pace set by the King's Hand. [#8b0000 "What shall we be doing in the meantime? So, we do not interfere with the postponed tour, we want to ensure no rules are broken before they are even properly provided to us."] She says, her voice a little rougher than it was six months ago, before any of them stepped foot onto the island and the monstrosities they survived while there.
~
Carrigan always had found it amusing in the way their young king was. Swore up and down he hated magic and fairytales. That there was no such things as a happily ever after. And yet he had to have a garden that would make one think of the bible's garden of Eden. Fruits and flowers of any kind, stone, cobblestoned pathways and archways. Even small streams and fountains. It had always been Jeremiah's favorite place of the palace. His safe haven and go to spot when he wished to be away. Almost did the older man wish that he would happen to take others out there. But alas, the king preferred to keep it as his own. Only claimed that he would take "the one" out there.
He had almost become lost to his thoughts when one of the young ladies spoke up. The man stopped and turned to them with a smile. [#f33a30 "Most the palace is yours to do as you choose. Roam as you see fit. The main rule, rules I should say are to stay away from the dungeons and not to go into the gardens without the King."] It was plain and simple, but those had been the instructions he himself had been given to give.
~
Arabella's eyes were actually trained on the garden, just slightly peaking from the edge of the castle proper as they walk past. Though her disinterest in the conversation, hearing that the garden is off limits bums her out more than she wishes it would. She hopes that they really did meet the requests for how their rooms would be set up. It might give her the only release she could have for her magic.
Haven is actually the one to speak next, her dark brown hair is a bold contrast to the gold dress she wears, her fit form only complemented in its shape. She's the one least affected by their time on the island, as to be expected as a member of the elite guards of the capital. She stands just under what the king would, with golden eyes as striking as the dress itself. [#4b0082 "How long will the king be away on business? When is the set to return?"] She asks as they actually enter the foyway of the castle proper.
~
It did appear these young women were quite curious and had a list of questions for him. To be expected quite surely. But this one, the one that Haven chose to ask was a little tougher for the man to answer. He had to be more thoughtful and deliberate with it. Because he knew that the "beast" was free for only the night of the moon. But there was the mindset the king was in after. Some moons were better than others. Some of the time he was back to being himself in the day and then other times it took him a few days. It all depended on Jeremiah and the level of control he had before the transformation.
A faint smile graced the elder man's lips as he stopped and turned to face the young ladies behind him. [#f33a30 "He did not give me a set day of his return. All he said to be was he was to return within the week. All of you will know when I know."]
The majority of the group thanks to him for answering the questions they've asked, all beside Arabella, who is far more interested in just how magnificent the foyway of the castle is. Though hearing that the King could be away for an entire week gives her a breath of relief.
[#228b22 “So, if the King is going to be gone, and we are allowed free-reign of the castle, who will be giving us a tour so we don't get lost?"] Kassidy asks, piping up from the back of the group, near Arabella. Her gown is significantly more elaborate than the rest of the group, with pounds of tulle flowing around her, just like her light blonde hair falls around in light waves. She is petite, not only in height but in weight, managing to maintain a healthy weight throughout the Island better than anyone else, something that Arabella still doesn't understand. She walks with a minor limp, having gotten a torn ligament while on the island, something that Arabella worked really hard to heal while keeping her magic a secret from those who were watching.
~
[#f33a30 "If it is to come to it, then I shall be the one to lead the tour and to help you get acquainted with the castle and the grounds. Though as lovely as all of you are, I would much prefer the king be the one to show you.”] Carrigan said, giving each of the young women a small smile in turn. The man had given answers the best that he was able and then led each to their room.
~
Once they've fully entered the castle, Arabella is in shock. The elegance of the castle is far more than she could have ever imagined it to be. The vibrant colors bring a warmth she hadn't expected to feel in her gilded cage. And gilded it is, there are golden details in almost everything around her, from the paintings on the walls to the support beams on the ceiling. An equally vibrant fragrance of flowers fills the air and while the other contestants seem unphased by the beauty surrounding them, it's all Arabella can look at. Though after a few moments of them walking through the castle in silence before Arabella actually says something. [#DAA520 "Wait, so the kings not here, and we don't have some fancy even to attend?"] Arabella says, coming to a complete stop, focusing all of her attention on Carrigan.
~
The young king's tastes sometimes had the older man at a loss. As in he did not understand the need for the extravagance. All the golden trimmings and golds, the paintings from different historical periods, even the red and gold carpets. The castle was old and on a mountainside that had all these grounds. The gardens as they had been able to so clearly see. But there were also forests nearby, giant lakes and waterfalls, and a riding corral for horses. His master really for the lack of faith in magic and fairytales seemed to like to model his location...the place he chose as the main palace to be as if it were from what little girls dreamed of. [#f33a30 "That is correct. The king himself is not to be here for another day or so. Perhaps more. And you all have free reign to do as you choose until he may get here. No, there will be no fancy events until he is here and able to attend as well. Just protocol and to make this easier."] Came Carrigan's soft words.
~
Hearing that there will be no fancy event and they are in no danger to run into the king, Arabella places her hand against the wall and uses the other hand to pull off the 4-inch heels her stylist put her in. She has both heels in one hand, and with the other she runs it through her hair, causing the perfectly crafted curls to become disheveled. She looks back up to find everyone staring at her. Jocelynn appears to be in complete horror at the sight of her informality.
[#DAA520 "What?"] Arabella asks, looking from face to face uncertain of what she's done wrong. Kassidy can't help but chuckle a bit, but otherwise, no one says anything.
~
The older man chuckled in his amusement. It seemed that Arabella was the most relaxed of the young ladies. IF only she had the chance to be. And it seemed she did not quite understand what happens to have the others in shock. A very dear child in his mind.
[#f33a30 "I believe the others are thinking this is a palace, my lady. And that to be in a place such as this is to keep up appearances and to be for lack of better words 'prim and proper’."] Carrigan said, the sparkle still dancing within his eyes. The thing was, the man knew Jeremiah and knew he was more for the relaxed sort. He preferred seeing a person as they were and not who they pretended to be.
~
Arabella meets Carrigan's eyes, shocked by the sparkle within them, unsure if it's amusement at her expense or as a result of her actions or not. She looks around at the others, seeing that they all have a bit of judgment within them, even Kassidy, the only contestant she connected with that has made it this far, has judgment dancing in her crystal blue eyes. She turns her attention back to Carrigan before responding [#DAA520 "I don't know about everyone else, but I was told that until the King sends me home, I will be living here, which makes this place no longer a place to be prim and proper but my residence. Maybe it's just the whole village girl thing, but I don't know anyone that walks around at home in a full ball gown and four-inch heels."] The choice of words is unintentional but it revels to everyone exactly how much chance Arabella believes that she has at becoming the next Queen, though the group would likely believe this is merely because of her origin as a commoner, and not the depth of her concerns.
The effect her words change the tone of the group though, Kassidy's posture eases away from being so tense, Mae seems more confident, Jocelynn seems unphased, and Haven seems truly amused by something beyond Arabella's words.
~
The look within Arabella's eyes was one he had seen before. One of confusion and a lack in understanding. But more it was of one who was trying to read and to understand those around her and the situation. By far from all the watching that had been done, this particular young lady was the most clever and resourceful. There was a fire about her that the others did not seem to possess. A fire that very well could stand against the king if he chose to be unreasonable. So perhaps she could be the one to break the curse and to set the young lord free.
[#f33a30 "Make no mistakes, my dear. All of you have been told the very same. Most just happen to think that this place, the king's presence requires the gowns and the heels. I will however leave all of you with this. The palace is to be your home until you are to be dismissed by the master. BUT how you behave and what you wear in his presence is up to you. It will be a tell-tale way into getting to know you. Which is his hope. To see beyond the pretenses that this little game has put upon you..."] More than he should have been saying, but the older man wished them to know a little bit more.
~
There is a brief moment of silence as Carrigan's words fall over the group, causing a different reaction in each of the girls. Haven seems the least affected by this, looking over at Carrigan with a knowing look, clearly amused by a secret only the two of them know. Kassidy would suddenly start beaming, clearly excited that it's going to be less proper then previously assumed. She giggles at the prospect, which as a daughter of the head of agriculture, formalities aren't her strong suit.
Mae tilts her head just slightly, processing what he just said and changing her prior plan to fit accordingly. While Arabella is not happy to hear this. She thought that by acting like herself, sans her frequent use of her abilities, she would prove herself incapable of being a queen, too informal, too unrefined. But the king wants someone to be just who they are, meaning that if she is going to get sent home, she's going to have to do what she can to not reveal who she is to him at all. The fire in her eyes grows cold as she clenches her jaw, once again cursing the fact she has to deal with the Monster King.
Jocelynn is the first one to speak, as well as to continue walking, [#f08080 "Thank you for letting us know, though I do wonder if you'd be willing to give us a little light on who the King is outside of the show of formality required in public events?"] She asks, her tone still as formal as always, indicating that she truly is the formality within her life, unsurprising as the daughter of the kingdom’s top scholars.
Everyone assumed the saying "It's good to be the king" was the truth. That you had what you wanted and when you wanted it. Most people pictured the fairytale life. The perfect life. And when those words were caught by the twenty-two year old, all he could do was laugh and scoff. They clearly didn't know the first thing...Life was NEVER what one expected and ALWAYS threw the most "interesting" of obstacles in one's path.
[b "You said the draws have been made and the young ladies chosen? You know I don't like this anymore than they do, Carrigan.. But what choice is there? This godforsaken curse needs to be lifted. And what better way is there than this?"] The man asked, brushing dark locks from his face, dark eyes watching out the window as the sun had set. Even if he laughed and called fairytales rubbish, the young man, Jeremiah had taken EVERY account of curses quite seriously. How could he not when his own father had been cursed and because of it...when he was ten he had lost both his parents?
[#f33a30 "What choice do you have, my lord? The only way to break this curse is by finding 'the one'. And what better way than a little 'friendly' competition?"] Carrigan said, agreeing with the young man he stood beside. He clearly was amused with the tasks at hand. Of course the man had been the one to help make them up. The one to test the young women until it had come down to the five that both the king and he saw before the golden gates encircling the palace.
[b "You are to deal with them. Be nice and answer anything they might ask. I would greet them myself but the moon. So I shall return after."] He muttered and gave a way to his hand. It was his dismissal to his most trusted adviser and one of three who knew the nor so wonderful truth about him and his family's curse.
Carrigan bowed and when he had been dismissed, the man left the young king. He knew that the young man would be locked down in the dungeon and he would be brought prisoners. The worst of the worst and let the beast within have its way. T'was how things were and how they had always been. But it was best this way so at least Jeremiah gave into the curse but was not a true danger to the innocent.
[#f33a30 "Welcome my ladies. You have made it this far and not without difficulty I am sure. But fear not, the feat is almost done. All you must do is survive palace life. Prove to the king and the kingdom why you should be the next queen and marry the king. Now if you would, come with me.. I shall show you each your chambers."] The man said, smiling and bowing to each young woman in turn. And when his words had been spoken and bows made, Carrigan turned and began to lead them on.
There are moments beyond our control that alter the course of our lives forever. Such an event occurred the moment letters were sent out alerting the kingdom to the beginning of the Queenstrial, an old tradition adored by the people of Cresal. A competition that compares to no other, for the grand prize is a marriage to the King. There is one lucky woman selected from each sector of the kingdom, totaling out to be 30 women, which are transported to The Hunting Grounds. The Hunting Grounds holds the first portion of the Queenstrial, testing everyone on their survival skills and combat prowess. During this time frame, 25 out of the 30 women are eliminated from the competition.
Most would relish at being able to compete for the chance to marry the King, but news of the lottery was a somber day in the Spark Household. The chance of being close to the King is the last thing Arabella would desire, for she descends from a magical lineage. However, the lottery is a mandatory drawing and there is no changing who is chosen as the sectors competitor. So, on the day of the drawing, Arabella and her parents said few words, barely noting that the chance of her being drawn is slim but couldn’t bring themselves to be anything but worried. So, there they stood, in the town center, surrounded by lots of eager young woman, praying that Arabella’s name wouldn’t be drawn. But as fate would have it, the announcer draws Arabella’s name, changing the course of her life forever.
During the days prior to her leaving, Arabella and her parents searched for a silver lining, finding only the money granted to those who make it into the final 10 as a positive result. The money would change their lives for the better, allowing them to make much-needed repairs to their home and grant them tools that would further assist in their day to day life. Yet what they wouldn’t be able to predict is Arabella becoming a favorite of the people, who furthered her ranking.
Being the favorite of the kingdom is something that Arabella couldn’t have accounted for, but she certainly wishes she had. For now, Arabella stands in front of the gates to the King's castle, one of the finalists. The ironwork of the fence before her is delicate and detailed, and Arabella isn’t sure if she should be in awe or terror of the master-crafted gilded cage before her.
All the while, Arabella smiles, waiting what she expects will be her last few weeks alive. For her darkest secret is the kind that gets you killed on National Viewing, the ability to perform magic. If she has to go out from discovery, she is grateful for the chance to be near the king, because at least she has a sliver of a chance to change his mind. She knows the likelihood of her succeeding is slim, but it’s the only thing keeping her from running out into the surrounding woods.
So here she stands, in the finest dress she has ever seen and shoes so delicate she wonders if they will hold her weight, waiting for the gilded cage to open and allow her and the four other girls to enter.
