[center [font "Nyala" It's been seventeen years since the first out break happened. Everyone was starting to get back onto their feet, and their lives were slowly starting to get back together. Towns were being rebuilt, and people were getting married and bringing children into this fuck up world. Not everything was okay though. There was always something missing. Something that everyone wanted back. The feeling of being safe, never having to look over their shoulders to see if the dead were walking once more. That's the one thing that was missing. Meanwhile four people who had created a bond over the years, are finally realizing their feelings, and realizing what they want out of each other.]]

[center [font "Nyala" Dakota and Samson had been cleaning out their aunts house, and they came across a journal she had kept. A journal talking about the first outbreak, and what had happened over that year. They were surprised to see what had happened, and they showed their friends the two journal entries that matted. The one from the first day, and the last day of the outbreak seventeen years ago. Maybe things might help out if things happened again... The four are hoping that it doesn't, but there has been some rumors going around about it happening in other towns, and in a different state. The four were focusing on the journal entries, when they realized the outbreak is going to happen again.]]

[center [font "Nyala" [i Today is the first day since daddy has been allowed to come home. Ever since the explosion at the plant, everyone else's families haven't gotten their loved ones back. I guess momma and I are the lucky ones. But there is something I've noticed though. Daddy seems different. He isn't his normal self, and I can see. His eyes are different too. They seem to change colors every couple of hours. Right now, they are a light brown color, with red lines going though them. I'm honestly scared right now. I don't know what to do.]]]

[center [font "Nyala" [i Momma and daddy think I'm locked in my room, but they didn't realize I could hear everything they were saying. Momma's scared too. She tried asking daddy what was going on. He wouldn't say anything right away, he would just pace around the room. I could hear my mother's breathing getting heavy, and then she started begging him to talk to her. Finally he spoke, and the words I heard sent chills down my spine. [b "Everyone's dead. Everyone is going to die, and the dead will walk the earth eating everyone that's breathing."] Hearing those words I knew something was wrong. Momma didn't believe him, so she had started yelling at him.]]]

[center [font "Nyala" [i When she started yelling, was when I put my headphones in. I did some research a little while ago, and I found out a little bit about the explosion at the plant. Someone had been running experiments, and something had gone horribly wrong. Something dangerous, and something worth looking more into. I'm really scared. I can't do anything and I don't know if I want to do anything. Hold on.. Somethings happening outside, I can hear it over my music...]]]

[center [font "Nyala" [i Journal.. I don't know what the hell happened, but when I walked out my door I knew something was wrong. Something wasn't right, and as soon as I walked down the hall I froze. Daddy was on his hands and knees, and he was shoving skin and bones into his mouth. Momma was lying on the ground bleeding, and I just turned and ran. I'm locked in my room with a bookcase blocking the door. The banging stopped a little while ago, and the sun is starting to set. [center [font "Nyala" [i Dear Journal,]]]

[center [font "Nyala" [i It's three hundred and sixty five days since the outbreak started. I've been on the run since the snow was still on the ground. I've been trying to survive out in the world, watching as people I knew started rising from the ground. Watching as they walked the earth again, but this time as zombies. I had to find my mother lying on the floor with my father eating her. I didn't know where the rest of my family was. I didn't know if they were still alive, but I ran into my sister about a month ago. She was busy keeping herself and my niece and nephew alive. Watching them, and seeing the terror in their eyes broke my heart.]]]

[center [font "Nyala" [i Now that I'm in a safe place, I was able to sit down and write my last entry. I'm hoping whomever finds this, you are alive and well. I hope you will take the pages, and keep them in a safe place. If this breakout happens again, you'll be able to tell the signs of when it first happens. I know I didn't know anything at first, but I feel like I know a lot more now. As the days passed, I knew I wouldn't see the world as it was. It's changed, and death is all around me. I can hear the scratching of the zombies downstairs trying to get in. I know they can't though. I'm safe for right now.]]]

[center [font "Nyala" [i Sorry for the slight delay. I had to kill another one of this fuckers out there. It had managed to get into the building from a broken window. I'm sitting here watching the sun setting. It's still a beautiful sight to look upon. I'm hungry though, I haven't found anything to eat in about a week now, and I can't survive much longer. My water supply is gone too. I have my knife sitting right here next to me. I know I'm leaving this world soon, and I'm glad. I hope if things go back to the way it was, you all will be working together. You'll build up the towns again, build a relationship with someone, and start a family. That's all I ever wanted..]]]

[center [font "Nyala" [i I can hear more of them out there. If anyone finds this, please tell my niece and nephew how much I love them, and I wish I could have watched them grow up. Also take these life saving tips with you as well. Make sure to remind everyone you love them, and don't let the world turn you cold. I'm going to have to move to another room, but I don't want to yet. I just want to leave one last piece of advice before I leave. Don't take your life for granted. You will end up losing your life in the end, and if you take it for granted, you'll be going straight to hell because of it. No one wants to be in hell, and I sure as hell have learned that over the last three hundred and sixty five days.]]]

[center [font "Nyala" The journal held page after page of ways to survive. Some of them seemed impossible to believe, but in the end the four friends knew it would be life saving. As the days passed, the rumors were getting more and more real. People were dying, and they were coming back to life and eating those around them. Now that the four are having to be on the run, they don't know what to do. They still have the journal, but will it be worth it to run? Should they stay where they were and just die? Or would it be better to live and start building the world up a second time since the first outbreak? You'll never know unless you join, [b We're Alive - A Story of Survival].]]

Roleplay Responses

Mila watched Samson, now it was bad enough he had risen his hand to any woman let alone his step-sister. She was furious about that, although if he was drunk then maybe it wasn’t so bad? She searched his face and saw his expression change when Dakota started speaking and she pushed past him, watching Dakota spill everything to Freddie. It made more sense why she was so traumatised by Samson’s presence and Mila felt sick to her stomach as Dakota spoke and before she could finish the details, she was outside and retching and trying to keep as quiet as possible.

She could understand people being animals during this outbreak where the dead rose up and walked with them and ate flesh. But before this, and what Samson had done was rape. It wasn’t some drunken backhand. He had raped that girl and she had travelled with him, she had trusted him. Her body shook as she glanced around to make sure her sickness had not attracted any walkers before going back into the log cabin and wiping her mouth, taking a drink of water and so wishing it was something stronger.

She stayed quiet, almost disgusted with herself and feeling ashamed for ever liking him. She had thought he was attractive. She had though he was a nice guy. Boy, she had been wrong! She finally managed to find her voice, standing between Freddie and Samson because God only knew what would happen between them both, not because Freddie was in love with the girl or anything but because Freddie had made himself a protector. Any man would want to see blood for such a horrible crime. She was doing her best to be calm but it was really, really difficult right that moment. She turned to look at Samson, searching his face but she couldn’t find anything there. She had taken his friendly flirtations as a personality quirk.

Freddie of course moved to murder the other man and Mila shifted once more between them and glared. She was not defending Samson but the noise would bring walkers. Her eyes fell to Dakota and her heart shattered for the girl.
“So.” She turned to Samson,
“Couldn’t keep your dick out of her could you? What’s wrong, not used to girls turning you down?” She remarked.
“Go and sit with her.” She said to Freddie, softening ever so slightly.
“Go and sit with her and if he comes near I’ll cut his throat myself.” She assured and her eyes fell back to Samson. What the Hell were they going to do with him?

“You’re a monster. It takes a real shit kind of person to do that to a girl- but you weren’t hurting her were you, you were showing her what she was missing, right?” Mila almost wanted an excuse to make an attempt on his shit life.
“Why the fuck shouldn’t I cut you’re legs at the tendons and leave you for the walkers to take care of?” They weren’t animals and Mila wasn’t a cold blooded killer no matter how much she came across like it. Her expression was cold and emotionless as she watched Samson. She wouldn’t leave him behind, she’d probably leave him with whatever new group they came across and let them deal with him because they were four young people in a world of shit, no one needed this in their conscience.

[center[pic http://oi65.tinypic.com/suyihw.jpg]]

Freddie was mortified as he listened to Dakota and he hugged her to him tightly. He felt like he was going to be sick as well but he resisted because it would make Dakota feel bad. She was the victim. But Dakota was right, Samson needed to go.
“You think you’re a big man, slapping little girls and forcing your pathetic baby dick in them?” He got up and got in Samson’s face, it was complete red mist and he knew if he started to punch the other guy, he wouldn’t stop. Luckily, Mila came in and got between them. Freddie didn’t care what Mila said and part of him felt sorry for her too because obviously, she’s been duped. But Dakota...

Freddie narrowed his eyes,
“He’s not coming with us.” He muttered.
“If you want to stay with him and be his next fucking victim then you do that. I’m not letting him near Dakota while I’m still living.” He muttered and met Samson’s gaze, full of hatred. He couldn’t be trusted. What if he did it to Dakota again? Although Freddie knew the man wouldn’t get anywhere near her while he was living.
“He’s a sad little boy. A coward. He should be fucking castrated.” Freddie narrowed his eyes but Mila was right, as much as he hated admitting it.

“Alright. But he leaves. Or me and Dakota will be gone by ourselves.” He remarked and sat with Dakota once more, his eyes not leaving Samson because the man wouldn’t get near her ever again if he could help it. And honestly? Freddie didn’t trust himself to be around Samson without beating the crap out of him and he didn’t trust himself to stop. Pricks like Samson never got the consequences to their actions and instead, Dakota had been living in fear and in complete terror for God knows how long. Freddie was glad he had helped her when he had saw her because if not and Samson had come across her, he didn’t even want to think what would have happened.

What Samson had done wasn’t a situational thing, it couldn’t be excused as an accident or self defence. He’d raped a girl. He’s beat the Hell out of her, he’d raped her. He didn’t love Dakota because you would never do that to someone you loved. Samson wouldn’t get within a mile of Dakota again if he could help it. He’d sooner have died than let that man near Dakota. Not because he thought she was beautiful and sweet but because Freddie had sworn to her to keep her safe and the young woman needed to understand that there was still good people in this world and not everyone was like Samson.

She was a sweet girl, a naturally gentle being, Freddie could see that and he couldn’t imagine anyone being so malicious to her. There were some twisted individuals on this earth and it was always the sweetest and gentlest that were their prey and Freddie wanted nothing more than to kill the man in front of him but he had to be there for Dakota.
“Tie him to a fucking chair and leave him for the walkers.” He muttered to Mila. He would get some sort of satisfaction from watching the man get pulled apart, he had to admit it. Freddie was usually a calm soul but this was something else and he couldn’t ever imagine forcing himself into a girl and listening to her cry and fight and still being able to... nevermind. He kept a protective spot by Dakota and half dared Samson to come near and give him the excuse.

[center [font "Georgia" Seeing the terror in Dakota's eyes made him slightly uneasy. The way she was screaming he knew the walkers would be upon them in minutes. When Mila grabbed him, and pulled him into a different room, he ran his hand over his face and sighed a bit. What was he supposed to do? He had done so much more than hit her, but he wasn't about to tell this woman that. He needed her trust, so he chose to lie. At least a little bit anyway. What harm could it do to tell a little white lie anyway?]]

[center [font "Georgia" He took a breath and looked into her eyes. [#1E90FF "Yes I did hurt her. It wasn't that bad though. She had been mouthing off, and I was drunk. So I back handed her. He just hoped Dakota would keep her mouth shut.]]

[center [font "Georgia" As her screaming died down, he looked over his shoulder and saw her. She did look like a scared little girl. The way she was clinging to Freddie, made the male's blood boil. He had wanted her to cling to him like that. He had wanted to make her so much more than his step sister. It was kind of a sick thing to think about, but it was true. He had fallen head over heels for the woman, the first time he saw her. She had been the most beautiful thing to him.]]

[center [font "Georgia" He sighed lightly, and looked back at Mila. [#1E90FF "If you want me to be honest, I will be. Yes I did hit her, but I didn't do anything else. Honestly I still feel something for her. I know it's wrong of me to feel like that, but I do. I can't shake the feeling. I wish our parents never got together"] he said in a rush.]]

[center [font "Georgia" [#1E90FF "Maybe then things would have been different. Her and I wouldn't be step siblings, and she wouldn't be so scared of me. She would be clinging to me, instead of that asshole out there"] he said looking back over his shoulder. He knew the moment he was along with Dakota, and Mila and Freddie weren't around, he was going to do some damage, and then claim that another person arrived and did it to her. Maybe he would kill her as well. Those thoughts seemed to please him, at least a little bit.]]

[center [font "Georgia" His eyes moved back towards the other, and a slow smirk passed over his lips. [#1E90FF "Sorry for grossing you out, but you wanted honesty, and that's what I gave you. Are you still mad at me?"] he asked. When he fell silent, he heard Dakota speaking, and his blood ran cold. She was telling Freddie everything. His cover was going to be blown in less than five minutes. He was screwed. He tried to block it out, as he tried to think of an excuse as to what she was saying. Maybe he could deny the whole thing.]]

[center [font "Georgia" He knew that wouldn't be a good thing, but he just stood there hoping that Mila wouldn't hear what was going on. If Freddie believe Dakota, he was going to be in some deep shit, and he couldn't afford that right now. His mind raced, trying to think of a good excuse to use. One that would hopefully, get him out of this mess and into calmer water with everyone.]]

Mila was more surprised by Dakota’s reaction to seeing Sam and she raised an eyebrow.
“I’m fine.” She said sharply and looked at Mila, she was freaking out really bad.
“He’s right. Shut her up or she’ll have us overrun by the walkers.” She commented but that didn’t mean Samson was off the hook. She ignored his question because honestly, she wanted to know what the Hell was going on right then between him and his sister, was it? She wouldn’t have secrets and she wouldn’t have lies. Freddie has marked her face slightly from the scuffle but it didn’t hurt and they had bigger issues right then to deal with. She wondered what the Hell has happened to Dakota to make her react that way to Samson’s presence.

She rounded on him,
“What the fuck is going on?” She asked and looked to Freddie and Dakota before grabbing Samson’s arm and moving into another room, not that it would really guard their conversation because it was so quiet and the walls weren’t thin.
“You’re going to tell me why that girl is freaking out so much in there.” She said and watched him. Samson seemed like he liked a laugh and a joke but maybe there was something deep seeded in him. She’d never seen a girl react like that to a man.
“You want me to have your back, you gotta be honest with me, right now.” She liked Samson, he seemed harmless but now she wasn’t so sure. It was going to be a real issue if the other two didn’t accept their help because there was safety in numbers. And honestly, Mila was exhausted. She wanted sleep and a safe night of warmth so she could at least be well rested if she was to be eaten alive.

Her eyes traced Samson. Dakota had been terrified of him. And Mila figured people could freak out and break down these days but she did it expect that kind of reaction. Her pale eyes were wary.
“A girl doesn’t freak out like that for no reason. Samson, I’m asking you to be honest with me.” She said, trying to pry it out of him,
“Did you hurt her, like she said, before?” She asked. Maybe he’d given her a slap or something like that. Something they could work past. She glanced back towards the room and realised Freddie was comforting Dakota and hopefully that meant things would become quieter. She had trusted Samson and kept nothing from him, she expected the same in return.

[center[pic http://oi65.tinypic.com/suyihw.jpg]]

Freddie was more wary of the two and Dakota’s actions only made him worry. He was in some state of shock while Dakota freaked out and moved away from him. He looked to Mila and Samson, but Mila was so quick to grab the other Male and drag him away from the scene. He looked to Dakota, kneeling beside her. She couldn’t keep screaming and he didn’t know what to say because he had no idea what the Hell was going on between them both. He reached out and pulled her close, if anything to smother her cries so she could cry and shout but it would be muffled.
“Dakota. Dakota, listen to me. What’s going on? Who is that guy?” He asked as he swallowed thickly, not sure he wanted to know the answer because he was a nice guy but he wouldn’t stand for men who hurt women. He’d done some bad shit in the army but never had he hurt a woman.

“Dakota, please.” He hushed her and wiped her tears with his sleeve,
“Tell me what’s going on. What did he do?” He knew Samson had done something because Dakota’s reaction was heartbreaking for him to watch and no one got that way for no reason.
“I know you don’t know me, I know I’m a stranger to you but I promise whatever it is, I’ll keep you safe from it, right?” He vowed and watched her carefully, there was so much hurt and fear in her eyes and he had a sick feeling in his gut at what had happened. ‘I didn’t mean to tell her’ and he had found her in a hospital. His heart was hammering because it could be anything. And he didn’t trust outsiders, even Dakota he had been wary of to begin with. They needed a group, but a group they could trust.

He wrapped a blanket firmly around Dakota and drew in a breath. It was obvious Samson had hurt her in some way, and he wouldn’t stand for it, he wouldn’t allow them to travel with himself and Dakota. It was a huge risk. It was extra mouths to feed, extra people to worry about and with Dakota being terrified of Samson, Freddie wouldn’t leave her alone with him.
“No one’s going to touch you while I’m around, you hear? Just stop crying, you’ll give yourself a headache and I’ll sort this. One way or the other, I’ll make sure he doesn’t ever touch you or come near you.” He promised the girl. It seemed so strange he was acting that way over a girl he barely knew. He looked to where Mila and Samson were just outside the door in the hallway and narrowed his eyes.

Mila honestly had to wonder if this boy was real. Maybe he’d bumped his head at some point? She was in a sort of stunned silence as he kissed her hand and she stared at him for a long time before shaking her head, hiding a small smile as she started to walk with him. She was alert, as alert as she could be given her exhaustion. She had to admit she sort of trusted him enough to rest with him around. If he wanted to kill her, he’d have done it by now, right? He was so odd, it was a confidence that life would return to the planet even amongst all this. It was both unnerving and hopeful.
“Alright wonderboy you need to stop-“ She said in protest but silenced when she saw the lights and she narrowed her eyes. Walkers couldn’t turn on lights. Although she had to admit ‘Wonder Boy’ suited him.
“People.” She said quietly. She reached behind her and drew the machete type blade, warily approaching the cabin.
“You’re best staying hidden so you can find your pretty sister.” She said to Samson as she let her hand slide from his, taking a deep breath.

She could hear muffled voices so now she was sure it wasn’t walkers. She could only hear two voices, two was an easy task to take on as long as they didn’t have guns. She drew in a deep breath, her short hair shifting around her features as she glanced to where Samson was before facing the door and keeping as quiet as possible. She just hoped this didn’t go horribly wrong. She opened the door, immediately taken off guard by the sight. A male and female. Both were young, and as far as she could see in the flash second, there was no one else present but she was glad the warmth from the fire leaked into her body.

Freddie looked to Dakota and smiled a bit,
“I mark safe places, quiet places on the map. So that if something goes wrong, we know where is relatively safe-“ No longer than the word ‘safe’ had left his lips than Mila had appeared and he immediately flew into protection mode, shifting to pin her against the wall, knocking the machete from her hands and pinning her.
“Who the Hell are you?! Where’s your group?” He asked as Mila up with her legs and rabbit kicked him off her and she glared, somewhat shocked.

Freddie was surprised at his own actions honestly as the two stared at each other.
“We don’t have anything, we found this place.” Freddie remarked, in these times you would kill to keep hold of a tin of soup. The tension was thick.

“We’re not here for your shit.” Mila murmured and looked to the girl and then back to Freddie.
“Touch me like that again and you’ll wish a walker got you.” She muttered.

Freddie eyed her and wondered what she wanted. She looked exhausted and smelled of fire smoke. She looked rough.
“Are you alone?” He asked, having not seen Samson.

Mila watched him. Samson hopefully had been smart enough to hang back. She didn’t know these two and risking both their lives would be stupid.
“I’m with one other.” She said quietly and glanced to the door. She only hoped Samson was at least smart enough to stay under cover but somehow she doubted it.

Freddie was wary and honestly he didn’t trust outsiders so easily, especially when he had the fragile Dakota to look after. He shifted so he was between Dakota and the outsider.

[center [font "Georgia" Listening to the woman, he shook his head. He wasn't about to argue with her. If he had learned one thing from his mother, it was never to argue with a woman. The walkers weren't only attracted to noise, and he had a feeling the journals would tell them, what attracted them. As he climbed into the shaft, he held his breath and let her ahead of him. He wasn't about to lose sight of her either. When they were both down and out, he took a look at her handy work, and let out a low whistle.]]

[center [font "Georgia" [#1E90FF "Damn Mila, that was a pretty good idea. Just kinda sad about the mall though. I figured you and I could have opened it up again, when we beat this thing"] he said with a small teasing note in his voice. He knew the woman was going to book it, as soon as the sun rose, but he was glad for the company, at least for a little bit. Then again he was using her, and she didn't need to know that. When he looked up at the darkening sky, he felt his heart skip a beat.]]

[center [font "Georgia" They had to find a place, and soon. He took her hand in his, and looked down at her, a small smile on his dirt covered face. [#1E90FF "You are amazing, and I was kidding about re-opening the mall. There's no way in hell, I would be able to pull something like that off"] he admitted. He brought her hand to his lips, and placed a gentle kiss upon it. Then he let her hand slip from his. The skin to skin contact, made his heart break a little bit. That's something he missed dearly.]]

[center [font "Georgia" Living in this fucked up world, changed everything. He couldn't hold a woman without getting bitten. He couldn't even court a woman, without blowing her head off. He just hoped the woman wouldn't choose to leave. He did need her help, in more ways than one. He just didn't want to admit it yet.]]

[center [font "Georgia" As his eyes scanned the area, he thought he saw some type of light. He didn't know if his eyes were playing tricks on him, but he took her hand in his, and pulled her in the direction he saw the light. [center [font "Georgia" Right as the zombie bit into her neck she let out a scream, and sat bolt up right. Her breathing heavy, and her fingers finding her neck. She touched smooth skin, and she closed her eyes taking a deep breath. That had been one of the worst ones yet. She couldn't believe she had pretty much died in her dream. She had heard somewhere, that if you died in your dreams, you'd die in real life as well. Her eyes found the fire, and she relaxed a little bit. That's when she heard the scratching noise.]]

[center [font "Georgia" She looked towards the sound, and spotted her male companion with a map. She sat there a moment longer, before grabbing the water bottle and twisted the cap off. [center [font "Georgia" She shouldn't be worrying about something like that. She was safe. At least as safe as she could be. She took a calming breath, before looking to the male. Mila watched him, as if thinking about something and she looked at him.
“We’ll do it your way. Get this journal. And after that, I’m going to the haven to the north.” She wasn’t even sure if the haven even existed but it was better than this. She shuffled into the shaft and looked down.
“I don’t know if I’ve been lucky but Boise draws them in. And they’re stupid.” She flicked a match into life and watched him, eyes lit up by the flickering flame.
“We have to be quick- this place will go up like the Fourth of July. Lead the way when we’re out of here.” She said to him and dropped the match down onto the pile of dry goods which smoked for a while before flickering onto life. She reached down the gap and started banging on the metal loudly in hopes to draw attention as the goods burst into flames.
“Go go go.” She said quietly as she started to crawl away from the shop, above any walkers. Through the occasional grate she could see the walkers being drawn to the sound of the crackling fire as shelves toppled down in the flames. She looked to Samson and hoped he could keep up as she sped up slightly and tried to gauge the best exit. She could see daylight and kept going.

Smoke was beginning to build as the flames leapt from store to store and she could feel the heat starting to radiate as she kicked the grate to the outside open and hesitated a moment to make sure that no walkers were below her. It was a fair drop and she figured it was going to hurt and she looked behind her before wiggling around all fours and sliding down to the floor outside and feeling her legs jolt with pain and she hissed. Luckily no breaks and she looked up at Samson, waiting for him as she drew the small blade she had acquired. Guns were all well and good but for every walker you killed, thirty more would come towards the noise. She eyed the area and it seemed like her plan had worked, thankfully for now. They had come out at the back of the mall and she was silently pleased. Walkers roamed into the fire and Mila figured that they would need to be careful as the mall would burst into flames soon enough.

“Not my best plan.” She muttered to herself. Samson would need to lead the way as she didn’t know where this supposed journal was. She didn’t like travelling in company because honestly, she knew it was only a matter of time before they died or turned vicious. She did need rest though for sure and she hoped they could find somewhere to hunker down for the night and she could sleep. She would never admit to being exhausted though, and she had to look strong because if she didn’t, she would end up left behind or dead. Her eyes watched the gap for Samson. He probably wasn’t a bad guy, she was just wary. Maybe after rest Mila would warm up to him a bit more.

Freddie watched the fire as he listened to the woman beside him. He had never heard of any journal being around, then again he had been with mostly military men, who hadn’t thought towards there being an end to this. He paused a moment, thinking back. No one had mentioned a journal of a woman before, not that he could recall. He found it strange that he couldn’t recall much from the past few months, everything seemed like a hazy blur. His eyes watched the flames, reflected in his gaze. He found it hard to recall faces, even at this point. He had never allowed himself to grow that close to anyone and it was lucky for him because most of them were dead now or missing. The last time he had been in a built up area, there had been papers stuck to a wall of missing people with photos and locations where their family would wait for them. He was lucky. His family had disagreed with his choice in the military, so had disowned him. He did hope they were alive though, no matter how much it seemed doubtful. He opened his mouth to speak but realised the girl was asleep. He smiled a little and shifted some hair out her face gently, admiring her features for a moment.

He shifted slowly and carefully to lay her down by the fire, tucking the blanket over her so she would be warm. It was all the comfort he could offer her and it was rare moments like this, that were quiet and peaceful and almost normal, that he lived for. For the briefest few moments he could forget the dead were walking and eating the alive. He lit a cigarette and took a long draw, moving next to the window and opening it a crack. It was so silent outside, he would have liked a building like this eventually if things were normal. Raise some kids and have a pretty wife at home, never lifting a finger. It was all just far away dreams though, now. Nothing would be normal again. He glanced over at Dakota, watching her sleep. Perhaps they could find somewhere safe eventually, somewhere they could gather some sort of life together. He couldn’t let her go alone to find this journal, her company was better than most. There was a soft side to everyone in this world but most of them had been buried under the strong sides that needed to kill to survive. He shifted and started looking through the cupboards for anything that would be of help to them.

Most of it had been cleared out by those here before, a loaf of bread reduced to a block of mould, he did find a soup can though and stuffed it into his bag. Anything edible was fair game, although the group he had been with before were great hunters. They would fish with Male shift nets and rods, hunt deer. One had even had a cross bow which was great for the silence they needed to keep. He looked out at the window and saw the skies turning a dim orange, signalling dawn finally. He didn’t want to wake the exhausted girl. She would need as much rest as possible for her injuries to heal. He pulled out a map and circled where they were, mostly so he could keep track of where was less dense with the dead than others. Heavily packed area were crossed out. He hoped this Dakota knew where she was going, and where to look.

Pale fingers ran through her short hair and she listened the man who had somehow weaselled into the same vicinity as her. She decided to keep her lips sealed about his sister, evidently it was a touchy subject. Although she did almost laugh when he said they could get back to ‘normal’.
“Do you really think anything will be the same after this? The dead are walking and eating the living.” She remarked and fished around in her bag and lit a cigarette, what did she have to worried about, cancer? She watched him as he spoke with careful and thoughtful eyes.
“Truthfully it’s to keep you talking. And it’s the end of the world and you’re being flirtatious?” She raised an eyebrow.

He definitely deserved points for trying. She was thinking carefully about how to get out of this place and she knew staying in one place was a disaster. The dead would break through in a few days and they needed to make sure they were out of here.
“Rest. I’ll find us a way out of here.” She said, cigarette hanging from her lips as she forced herself up and tossed him a bottle of water,
“Don’t worry I’m not going to kill you in your sleep.” She remarked and even managed a smile at him. She searched for a back exit but that just lead out to more dead. There were too many to fight off just the two of them and she had no idea how this stranger fought the dead. A dead girls journal didn’t sound like it would be much help but maybe it had some clues.

Mila’s gaze edged upwards and to the air vents, she turned and started cramming her bag with tinned food and stuff that would keep. She pulled out the contents for a short while. They would need a distraction to draw in the dead if they were up in the vents trying to make it out. A fire would do the trick. She ripped some labels and made a pile of dry paper. A match would set that later and cause noise and commotion enough to draw in the dead. She wiped her face and honestly she never slept it seemed. She would sleep when they were somewhere more predictable. If Samson wanted to tell her his story then she would listen but if he didn’t then she understood. Everyone had their reasons and it all depended on how long it had been since they lost their loved ones or killed them in some cases. There were many rumours about safe communities dotted around and that was her goal, to get to a safe community with other people and find out what the Hell was going on. But if he wanted to get that stupid journal then she would go with him.

Mila left it quiet for a few hours before nudging Samson with her foot,
“Cmon. Let’s get to that girls house. I have a plan.” She said and gestured to the vents as she climbed up and knocked the grate away before lifting herself up. She had never been overly fit in her life but the past few months had most people fitter than they had ever been. She tossed her bag up first and peered down at him,
“Let’s go.” She said.

[center[pic http://oi65.tinypic.com/suyihw.jpg]]

Frederick watched the girl before him. As much as the world was crumbling to shit, he still has his humanity and she looked like she had been through some rough times. He felt the warmth from the fire and it was safer in the woods these days. The dead headed for cities and such where there were still survivors. He nodded at her request to help with the cleaning of the cut, there was something about her. Perhaps it was all his military training or the fact he was man, but there was a definite instinct to protect her. He let her speak, finding it almost soothing because it had been a while since he had heard anyone speak to him.

He closed his eyes and leant back, taking in the moment of company once more. If she did have family then he figured he could help because really, what else was there to do? His family were probably all dead by now and even if they weren’t, they wouldn’t want to see him. Even the end of the world wouldn’t put him back in their good books. His gaze never faltered and he finally nodded,
“If you know where he would be, I’ll help you find your step-brother.” He said to her quietly and watched her pull the blanket over herself. Her request was not the strangest he had heard but human touch seemed something entirely foreign to him.
“Only if your promise to eat.” He said to her, feeling a bit more than slightly awkward at this.

He tested the tins heat over the fire before opening it. It wasn’t exciting, beans by the look of it but it was good food and they needed it. He scooted closer to her and plopped am old spoon in the tin for her as he handed it to her. He could go without, it didn’t bother him. If they were heading towards the city then there would be more scope to try and get more food anyway. He hesitantly wrapped an arm around he as he watched the fire lick at the wood. It wouldn’t last all night but it would at least heat the house and thankfully with the windows boarded up and everything inside hidden from view, any passing walkers would barely notice the cabin as long as they were quiet.

“It’s nice to meet you, Dakota.” He said quietly and kept a comforting arm around her. If it helped her rest and eat then there was no harm in it. It had been weeks since he had felt any comfort and although he felt awkward, he couldn’t rob this girl of a comfort he could give. If it was an arm around the shoulders, or food and he had it to give them he would help.
“I’m sorry for your losses. Whoever they may be and whatever you may have seen. I know everyone’s seen some awful shit.” He said quietly and didn’t move his gaze from the fire.
“Rest. We’ll be alright here for tonight.” He said and kept his arm around her. Once she decided to lay down he would do too.

Mila eyed the photo, remaining wary as the male stepped close and she eyed the girl in the picture. She didn't recognise her but everyone looked different now. She shot him a glare as he grabbed her arm and tugged her along. She didn't offer much of a protest as she searched her thoughts. Actual human touch was something she hadn't felt in months. She looked at him as he boarded up the entrance to the shop with tables. She stayed silent for a while as she searched for water and threw some down her throat, it had been a while since she had drank properly or eaten. She screwed the cap on and watched him.

"I don't recognise the girl. She might look different now. And I'm Mila." She said to him. She knew that the likelihood was that his sister was dead, but she didn't dare say it out loud. She would let him hope, for now. Hope was all most of them had. And if he hadn't seen her die with his own eyes then maybe she was alive somewhere. Mila shifted her hair from her eyes and slid to the floor, letting her legs rest as she closed her eyes and tilted her head back.
"I never joined a group. It was me and my sister for a good time. She got bit. We got overrun, she was bit. I couldn't even put the bullet in her. There were too many." She sad quietly, thinking back but she didn't cry or seem sad, it was like it was just a daily thing. And this was life now.Loved ones died and you never got close to anyone because if you did, they would die and you'd have to put a bullet in them yourself.

"Want my advice? Stay away from your sister. Focus on staying alive for you. If you find her, then what? Are you going to protect her from the millions of walkers out there?" She asked him, "We all tried, it didn't work." She commented to him, eyes level and watching him. "We're just kids, really. Orphaned by the world." She shook her head and sighed softly. She didn't even know what day it was anywhere. She fiddled with the water bottle in her hands, wondering if Samson was even real at this point, maybe she'd collapsed somewhere from exhaustion and this was what Hell was.

"What's your story?" she asked him finally. He looked like a nice guy, before all this. It was impossible to tell what people were before this happened. Once upon a time he would have been he type, although she wasn't sure she would have been his.

Frederik watched the girl awake and raised an eyebrow. He let her ramble and such, maybe she didn't know walkers went off of sound mostly but still. She was right. If it rained they were exposed to the elements and he stamped the fire out.
"Freddie." He replied when she said her name and she watched her. Behind all the blood and dirt, she was a cute little number. She was still delicate and oddly, it was kind of nice. She was still sweet, he could tell. He pushed himself up and grabbed his bags before following her.

"Slow down." He said quietly and pressed a finger to his lips as he peered through the trees to the cabin.
"Stay here. I'll signal if it's clear." He muttered and stubbed out the cigarette that had been hanging loosely from his lips as he headed towards the cabin, flicking his knife out and listening for any movement or groaning or rasping. He narrowed his eyes and creaked the door open. He couldn't hear anything but that didn't mean it was clear. His eyes adjusted to the dim light in the cabin as he felt his heart beating steadily. It seemed like the cabin had been raided but there were some unlabelled cans still scattered around and no sign of walkers. It had been derelict for some time. That was lucky. He put his bag down and headed to the door, waving for Dakota to join him as he approached her,
"You need to rest. That was a nasty cut." He murmured and eyed her over.
"I cleaned it. Managed to dress it but barely. You'll need to clean it every day. If you get an infection I don't have anything that'll keep that at bay." He said to her.

He pulled the curtains and lit a small fire in the fire place before boarding up the door with some chairs.
"You're out here alone?" He asked, surprised honestly. She didn't look the sort who could survive alone, maybe that was him being sexist but she just looked so fragile. A group must have protected her for some time. He wasn't much of a talker, but that was probably the military man within him. Instead he dug through his bag and tossed her a bottle of water before cutting a can open with his knife and putting the contents over the fire to cook, evidently he had been good at surviving for a long time. The army was good for some things. He sat by the fire and shrugged off his jacket, letting it dry and warm by the fire. He ran his hand through his hair and watched Dakota.People always surprised him these days and honestly, he was a bad judge of people. The gentlest of people ended up being the most vicious killers.
"Where's you're family?" As if he needed to ask. They were where everyone else was, dead probably.

Mila skidded to a halt, staggering as she tried to catch her breaths in deep gulps. Everywhere was panic and she couldn’t erase all that she had seen from her mind. A startled shrieking and screaming made her turn, and there she saw her sister. Older than her by a few years, and a striking blond, well once upon a time she had been. One of those [i things] had her by her long hair, yellow teeth sunken into her tan neck and Mila froze in terror.
“MIRA” she cried out but it came out in a horrible strangled cry. It was too late for her sister, dark blood pumped from her neck and Mila had to move. She ran and she ran and she ran.

Sanctuary was found in a cemetery -how ironic. She knelt behind a tombstone and wept for her mauled sister. That pretty face of hers had been twisted in pain and horror, her gorgeous blond hair tangled in decaying fingers. Mila ran her fingers through her own long hair. It had to go. She looked around and crept towards the houses, ducking and diving between carnage. People screamed and ran, mothers with babies, fathers with sons, he old surrendering to their fate. Mile five into a house and panted, staying quiet in case she could hear movement as she located the kitchen, closing a heavy door behind her as she cut and jacked at her hair with scissors she found. It was a messy job and was not feminine but they wouldn’t get her like they got her sister. She would live.

Even if she knew she should have died with her sister. She would live. She would survive.

Mila has stuck close to shopping areas. They were great for looting and gathering food and water and anything she might need. Her hair was still short but her body was more athletic than before. She had been skinny before but with all the travelling and killing, it had built muscle and that came in handy.

[i The Mall of America]

Yeah right.

Mila watched the dead shift around and she watched them, almost putting them as she stayed still. She wore a vest with a loose shirt tied around her waist, and leather jeans that were thick and boots. It wasn’t uncommon for people to look like total Hell nowadays and honestly, they should thank their stars they even drew breath. A walker approached and she shoved her knife through its eye socket and watched it crumple, raising an eyebrow and remaining cold and expressionless. A rucksack hung from her back and it had everything she needed; food, water, old photographs, extra knives. Nothing fancy or special but she was running low on supplies and she had heard that in the mountains there was a real safe zone. Apparently the military had set it up but it was one hell of a journey. She intended to make that journey. She had survived by herself, mostly relying on distraction and quiet steps to make it around walkers.

A voice made her pause and look over her shoulder. A man. And he was alone, from what she could see anyways. She narrowed her eyes and looked him over. He looked strong enough. That didn’t mean he was trustworthy. She feared the living more than the dead sometimes. It was why she had never joined a group, why she had stayed a lone wolf. She wasn’t about to protect and feed others when it was already a struggle to do that for herself every day. It was exhausting. Pale eyes scrutinised the stranger before her, he looked like he could hold his own if it came to it.

“There’s no safe zone here. Food and water, maybe. But no safe zone.” She remarked. She knew people had become animals and savages in the past year. They would murder for a bottle of water but she didn’t get this vibe from him, somehow.
“Where’s your group?” She asked bluntly, she couldn’t beat this guy in combat but she was sure she could out run him. She remained wary of her surroundings. Mostly for walkers but she wasn’t stupid, people were worse. The dead were just that, dead and easy to kill. The living were not so easy.
“I’m here for food and water. If you have a group, I won’t stop them using this place but I will fill my bag and go. No trouble.” She said, attaching her knife to her belt and watching him. Putting her knife into her belt was meant to mean that she wouldn’t cause trouble.

[b “Fire at will you cockroaches!”]
[b “Fall back.”]

The messages were mixed and Freddie could barely make out what he was supposed to be doing. But there were too many and civilians were starting to blend. He didn’t know what he was firing at anymore. It didn’t take long for the others to start retreating, terrified. Freddie didn’t need told twice as he ran back to his room, stuffing his bag with water and food, stuffing in ammunition and buckling his helmet in a rush as he slung his bag over. He’s long abandoned his family, although he did worry what had become of them since. He sighed quietly and tried to keep calm as he gazed at the chaos. He needed to find somewhere safe, anywhere safe. The air smelled like blood and death, screams and cries echoed through smoke and fire, his eyes stung with tears from the atmosphere.

By the time he made it out of the thickest part of the action, he was smeared in blood and dirt. It didn’t take long for him to figure out that most of his comrades were dead or turned. They had become his brothers, his family over the past years. He wouldn’t let them down by dying. He turned his gaze towards the less crowded parts. It would do for now. He needed shelter and to think of a plan.

Freddie had lived with a group for some time, tucked away. Most of them had been soldiers like him so they knew how to hide and how to fight. It had been so great until they had been struck by disease. Natural disease of course, but each had turned and Freddie had high tailed it out of there as the group turned on each other, fighting amongst themselves for scraps. Freddie had taken what he needed, food, water and what first aid kit he could carry when he left. Essentials. It was only ever a matter of time with the living before they turned on each other in malice. His uniform was now in tatters and more of a hodgepodge of different things put together to help him blend. Thick leather bands wrapped around his wrists and lower arms to stop walkers teeth piercing his skin there.

Freddie trudged through the wooded area, there were less walkers here due to there being less people to eat. He heard movement nearby and sunk behind a tree, drawing an axe from a loop on his rucksack. Guns were loud and brought unwanted attention and ran out of ammo pretty quick. He watched the walker moving towards- was that a girl? An actual living human? He moved silently towards the thing and before it could realise what was happening, he’d split its skull open with his axe, kicking it’s rotting body away. He looked down at the girl and sighed. He looked around and knew they were too exposed here. He was tired but he couldn’t leave her there to die. He picked her up with a grunt and moved to a more sheltered area.

Beside a river meant their sound would be masked to the walkers and he started to set a fire slowly setting the girl down close by so she would get some heat. He dug through his rucksack and eyes the blood on her shoulder. It was a nasty one for sure, quite deep but not too life threatening. He needed to stop the bleeding. He fished out what scarce supplies he had and taped some gauze to her wound, right so it added pressure to stem the crimson flow.
“What a mess you got yourself into.” He muttered as he took a drink from a black water bottle. He stayed awake and kept a close watch around for any walkers, hoping the rushing sound of the river masked them and the smoke masked the smell of her blood. He lit a cigarette, something looters didn’t really think of these days and took a long draw as he leant on his rucksack. When the girl woke up, if she woke up, they would need to find somewhere better to hide out and spend the night. This wouldn’t do.

[center [font "Georgia" [b "Dakota. Get your ass in here! Right now!"] Came the voice of Dakota's twin sister Diana. Danielle's eyes went to the window, and she shook her head lightly. The siren has been going off for about an hour and a half now, and it was starting to scare her. She shook her head, and went to find Diana. [#D7ACAC "What's going on?"] she asked as she rounded the corner, and walked into the kitchen. Diana was sitting on a bar stool with the T.V. on. Her face was pale, and Dakota's heart sank a bit. Something was wrong.]]

[center [font "Georgia" [b "You need to watch this.. I know why the siren's been going off for so long. And you know momma and daddy went into town.. They've been gone for a while.."] she said as she trailed off and turned up the T.V. Dakota didn't know if she even wanted to see what was going on. She chewed on her lip as she stood next to her sister, her eyes glues to the T.V. in front of them. There was a news anchor standing in front of a camera, and you could tell she was scared.]]

[center [font "Georgia" [i "Everyone needs to get in doors right now. Everything is falling apart. Julius and his children were working on something, and it blew up inside of their house. When the cops showed up, they weren't anywhere to be found. That's when they heard screams coming from upstairs, and they bolted up the stairs. What they found made them turn around, and run right out of the house, guns going off. The cops are standing outside the house, with their guns pointed towards it. I don't know what's going on, but something scared out toughest men."]]]

[center [font "Georgia" [i "Watching everything unfolding right now has my heart racing. I don't know if you can hear it, and I hope to god you can't. Please for the love of God-"] The woman turned towards the house as a window was broken, and something jumped out. Something dangerous, and something dead. [i "Daniel, we need to get out of here, right now!"] The woman screamed. Daniel stayed where he was filming the whole thing. Whatever fell out of the house was coming towards him. His face falling off, and bite marks covering his skin. Screams were heard, and then the screen went dark.]]]

[center [font "Georgia" Diana and Dakota turned and looked at each other. This wasn't happening. This couldn't be happening. The creature, or whatever it was looked dead, but it was also Julius himself. Dakota hurried and shut the T.V. off. She was shaking, and she honestly didn't know what to do with herself right now. Her eyes started tearing up, and Diana looked like she was about to pass out. [b "I tried calling momma, but she didn't answer.."] she said as she wrapped her arms around herself. Danielle felt her heart racing, and she tried to keep calm.]]

[center [font "Georgia" [#D7ACAC "Everything is going to be okay"] Dakota said lightly. She hoped it was anyway. Her eyes moved towards the back window, and her heart nearly stopped. Coming out of the woods behind their house was the dead. She didn't know how fast it was spreading, but if there was dead already coming towards them, it was spreading really fast. She grabbed Diana's arm and the two ran though the house towards the front. They came to a stop, and froze. Danielle's had was on the knob, but she couldn't open the door.]]

[center [font "Georgia" [b "Kota, what's going on?"] Diana asked, her voice shaking. [#D7ACAC "It's momma and daddy.. They.. Their dead.."] she said lightly. She felt tears sting her eyes, and then they both ran up the stairs as the front window was broken in. The twins tried to get out of the way, but Diana's leg was grabbed and bitten. Danielle's face paled as her sister was dragged back down, and the dead started feasting on her. She broke out into a run, and managed to get out of the house, without getting caught by the walking dead. Her heart was hammering, as she ran...]]

[center [font "Georgia" Danielle was sitting against a wall when the memory hit. She felt tears stinging her eyes, as she sat there. She had lost her entire family on that day. It's been a year since she did, and it still broke her heart when she thought of them. She bit her lip lightly as she reached up and touched her cheeks. They were wet with tears. She shook her head, and took a couple deep breaths trying to calm down. She heard something scatter across the floor, and she opened her eyes seeing a rat. She shuddered, and knew something was out there.]]

[center [font "Georgia" She grabbed her knife, and gun before she pushed herself up and moved out of the hallway. She slowly made her way though the hospital she had come across, and she was alone once more. The people she had been with were all killed. She had kill them, because they had been bitten and were turning. She didn't want them living this way. She should have done that a year ago, but she never thought about it. She bit her lip lightly as she moved along the hospital halls, trying to keep her foot steps light and soft.]]

[center [font "Georgia" Her body was screaming at her to stop and rest, but she knew if she did shit might hit the fan. She decided to slow her pace a bit more, since she could hardly breathe anyway, she slowed down and looked around herself. She was still in the hospital but close to an exit, and that's when she heard the growling. Zombies were inside of the building, and she was pretty much trapped if she didn't hurry and find a way out. She had to hurry before she was caught.]]

[center [font "Georgia" She found an open window and she moved towards it. She saw the jagged glass, and knew she would have to be really careful. She took a breath as she put her hands on the sill, and pulled herself up. As she was climbing out, she cut her shoulder, and she winced a bit. She had to get out of the hospital, she would worry about the cut later. She dropped down to the ground, and she spotted the woods. She hurried towards it, and took some cover there. Her breathing was heavy, and her heart racing a thousand miles a minute.]]

[center [font "Georgia" She bit her lip lightly as she leaned against a tree. She could feel the blood seeping though her shirt, and knew she had to pay attention to it. She shook her head, as she looked into the heart of the woods. She hoped there would be some type of shelter for her there. She would take it. She needed to get this wound cleaned and soon. She took a breath as she started walking into the heart of the woods. Her head was spinning, and she could feel the blood dripping down her back.]]

[center [font "Georgia" The cut must be deeper than she thought. As she walked around a tree, she spotted a shadow. She didn't know if it was human, or if it was dead. Whatever it was she hoped it would either help her, or kill her. [#D7ACAC "Help me.. Please.."] she called out, before she fell to the ground. The loss of blood making her pass out. She welcomed the darkness, as her eyes drifted closed. The last thought in her mind, was either help was coming, or she would be joining her family wherever they were.]]
