"The movies might be a risky move. Teenage girls are a whole another creatures, they like to fight about what to watch," she shook her head. She felt terrible to her parents mom and dads when Abby turned twelve.
"The rest sounds amazing," she added smiling to him. It almost felt like no time had passed, and he was still comfortable and yet those ships had no chance to come to harbor.
All and all perfect.
Kane nodded, "We can take the new truck or the old truck, up to you. Go get food at the diner and ice cream at the Cold Spot, maybe even see a movie that night, I hope your girls will like it and its on me, don't worry about a thing... are ya'll free tomorrow?" he asked smiling to her. "Blankets in the back and pillows, the whole nine yards... give those girls a taste of some country fall fun... maybe even go to a pumpkin path before you leave."
That wasn't the only thing that truck had seen they had been teenagers that thought themselves in a forever love.
"They don't need to know about what happened in that truck. We generally left around the same time. Just after graduation," she mused , imagining what her husband would say. "That would be a fun day. Spend some time by the river and star gazing."
It was an idea she liked and seeing Cyril and Abby cheered up. Kane and her had separated on good terms and as friends. He had been married and she still was. it wouldn't be bad.
“Like we used to? Sit down there in the bed of my old truck and listen to the river and watch the stars...you know that truck is still in Momma’s garage... I haven’t brought myself to sell the house yet....was thinking about moving back but no one is here for me anymore. Momma’s gone, you left.” He said taking her hand. “He might think you’ll be 21 forever but 26 doesn’t look bad on you sweetheart..... “
"Still as sweet, too..at least most things don't change," Iris chuckled wryly. She would rather make a comment and joke before missing any beat. "Somehow David thought that marrying me would keep me 21 forever. That's just a store. He can have all the mentally stunted girls he wants. I just want the girls."
She was shorter but that didn't mean a lack of spirit. "Maybe we should take them by the river. Cyril would love that."
Kane chuckled, "You look better but thank you, I don't know why anyone would want to divorce you.... kinda like people wonder why I'm not happy like I'm used to be... when one day your going to the doctor to see why you can't have a baby and find out your wife has cancer and six months later shes gone... thats why I haven't been happy but sitting here with you is the happiest I've been in months."
"Always a little form of drama, isn't there? I'm sorry though that's a hard hit," she said stirring her coffee. Luckily her life ha had been easy until last year. "He wants to divorce me. I don't know why I'm even surprised. I'm the second, younger wife."
This wasn't a good time to hash tales but he had started it. A blow to the confidence was something good for her.
"You do look good, though, the tattoos fit."
"Yeah I miss her.... lost my wife last year... so like I said its just me now." he sighed taking another drink of coffee. "Country singer... I know I finally made it... but remember it was either football player or country singer and we both know I wasn't that great at football." he said with a smirk. He hadn't lost his charm, he was still that awkward quirky guy she used to love.
A sharp eyebrow rose at that, still had issues seeing him as that. He was awkward still and had that mumbling that had driven her insane.
Before she could ask her phone rang, and she immediately answered listening to the two women go off on their sides. Down fall to working mostly with women, they fought like women.
"Are you done, ladies?" She asked after a minute. "That should be two articles. Fashion to get back on top of your game, and the mental help for recently single mom's. See? It all works out."
She hung up after they slowly agreed before shaking her head. "Sorry, I run a rising blog and most of it is women. Yep...so country star? That's unexpected, great though. Sorry about your mom though."
“Country singer.” He said smiling to her, “13 number ones but now I’m on a break, came home to relax and clear my head. Mom passed two years ago so it’s just me now.” He muttered taking a drink of his coffee.
"At least someone tamed him a little. Those lines were annoying as hell," Iris said going for the pastry. David had gone on this health kick, so this was a treat. Organic, non organic, as long as it tasted good.
"I'm still surprised. Dating this guy then he says he has a five and seven-year-old and there we go...but they stole my heart. The first time I was called mom I cried," she laughed at the memory. She felt as if that saved her and she was doing good. "So, what have you been up to?"
"Hes got Jules and they have one on the way... he married Willow... remember her? Quiet blonde girl always sat in the back, they're good together... but I never thought you'd have teenagers... damn things have changed." He said and didn't know if she had noticed the tan line from his wedding ring that was now gone.
The ring wasn't hard to miss. It wasn't huge but it was more pricey than above her range.
"I thought Ryan would have more kids by now with how he was always going on with girls," Iris mused and drank more of his coffee. "They are, I'm more of their mom than their actual mom is. David's seven years older than I am, it seemed like a good idea at the time."
She hadn't figured she would ever marry but that changed at twenty-one. Now she wasn't so sure but wouldn't change that for the world.
Kane chuckled, "its alright, I'm staying with Ryan and his family while I'm back home and well, I was roped into Barbie tea party this morning." He ordered a black coffee and put his own cream and sugar in. Sitting down in a booth he asked her, "What have you been up to? I mean you have daughters now... thats new."
Somehow she was able to dodge most of the questions that night before they passed out in her old room. They didn't like to share rooms but they had to here. Maybe it would help with their fighting.
Joining Kane in the morning after seeing the girls off she ordered extra expresso. It was supposed to be her damn vacation.
"Sorry, Cyril was dragging her feet on getting ready," she apologized giving him a light hug. He looked really good.
