[font "Bell MT" I well knew that straight-forward words would bring calamity,
But I could not repress myself, and forbear them.
I pointed to the nine Heavens in confirmation of my truth;--
All for the sake of His Majesty's intelligence.

At first he had given me this promise, But afterwards
he repented, avoided me, and took other.
I think it hard to be separated from him;
I am grieved that, intelligent as he is,
he should be subject to so many changes.

"Your Majesty," she whispered, barely audible over the rush of the river, "we should be going now." The woman wrapped her thin fingers around her companion's arm, pulling him slightly with a light amount of playful force. As much as she wished to be away from the capital city and by his side, she knew it was irresponsible to keep the Emperor away from the court for too long, especially since she had no formal title.

He groaned at her urging, turning to walk beside her, arm-in-arm. "I believe I told you not call me [i 'Your Majesty'] when we are away, A'yi." He pulled her closer, stopping her at the entrance of their carriage. "Listen," he said with a concerned tone, "you do not have to do this. I appreciate your eagerness to help, but I can send--"

She interrupted him by lifting herself to lay her lips upon his cheek, causing him to hesitate. "I am the only one you can trust. You know that, Xifeng. I cannot allow you to jeopardize your throne or mission because you trusted someone other than me."

Shuyi was going to travel as a spy into a foreign kingdom, integrate herself in the enemy palace, and send back as much information as she could. If she were to be found out while there, both the emperor and she knew her death was inevitable.

She held his hand tightly, bringing it to her face to cusp her cheek. "Let me do this for you, for us. When I come back, I will marry you as you wish."

The emperor looked down upon Shuyi's face with a smile. When they were little--and Xifeng was nothing but the 3rd prince--the two had always promised each other they would get married. At the time, it had been nothing more than a playful dream they never expected to come true. As time went on, the two only fell in love more and more, even when he became the emperor after the death and banishment of his two old brothers. When the time came that the two could truly marry, Shuyi refused, convinced that Xifeng would need to marry a foreign princess to keep his throne. For years, the emperor tried and tried to get Shuyi to marry him, and he refused to force her. Now, she was promising she would.

Happiness warmed Xifeng from head to toe as he took her face in both of his hands and pulled her to his, pressing their lips together. The two took in the other's presence for a few more seconds before pulling apart, both panting lightly.

Shuyi stepped into the carriage and took her seat before holding the curtain open for Xifeng. He smiled, grabbing her small hand and kissing her fingers. "You go ahead, I think I will stay here a bit longer." The emperor then ordered his personal guard to stay behind with him. He closed the curtain and sent the carriage off towards the capital city.

As it slowly started down the road, Shuyi pulled the curtain back to glimpse at Xifeng's figure staring out at the river. His hair, which was worn down since the two were in an informal setting, was waving with the wind. Shuyi said a silent goodbye to her love, and closed the curtain.
