Kane sighed, “I’m here for both of you. You wouldn’t have hit me if you still didn’t feel something for me. Like I said I love you Aleks.” He was leaning in the doorway now and looked up at her again, “I’ll call tomorrow morning and darlin’ if you need anything for Millie don’t hesitate to ask.” He didn’t want to offend Aleks but he also didn’t want his daughter to grow up without things like he had had to do.
Aleks walked him to the door and nodded when he asked if he could see her tomorrow. “Just make sure that you call ahead. Don’t just show up.” she said and just as she finished what she had said his lips were pressed against hers without single warning. It brought back so many emotions; emotions she had worked hard to repress over the years.
Aleks pressed her hands against his chest and pushed on it so that he would pull away and she shook her head. “This can’t happen. You are here for her, not for me.”
Kane nodded, “Tomorrow is Saturday, can I see y’all tomorrow?” He asked her seriously. He knew Millie didn’t have school on Saturdays and he wasn’t leaving town anymore. He was showing himself to the door and sighed turning so his face was inches away from hers and without warning he kissed her and it was like every memory Came flooding back. The fireworks were there.
Aleks smiled down at her daughter and said goodnight one last time. She always felt so blessed whenever she looked at that child and tonight was no different. Aleks walked out of the room after that and Kane followed behind her. She pulled the door shut and let out a sigh, turning to Kane as he spoke.
“You will pick things up quickly.” She made her way downstairs now. “Thanks for coming. She had been asking about you a lot lately and with you coming back for a while I thought it was about time. But, you should probably leave now.”
Millie nodded and asked, "Daddy your staying right?" Kane nodded, "I'll always be here Princess." She smiled, "Night mommy, night daddy." Shutting her door behind them Kane looked to Aleks, "Shes amazing... and I don't want her to ever get hurt... I'll take her to the daddy daughter dance... I just I'll have to learn how to be a dad... I have no experience with kids."
Aleks glanced at the clock when Millie yawned. It was a little earlier than usual for her to go to bed but she had a tiring and exciting day, it was no surprise that she found herself tired. Aleks moved towards her and smiled.
“Come on kiddo, lets get you to bed.” She said and as excepted she wanted Kane to come with them and was already wrapping herself around him. “Alright but straight to sleep tonight. You’ve got s busy day tomorrow.”
They walked upstairs and found her room, tucking their daughter into bed.
Aleks leaned down and kissed her forehead. “I love you pumpkin. Sleep well alright?”
Kane chuckled, "What color is your dress princess?" She smiled and said, "Purple." He nodded, 'I should have known... daddy will match you okay?" She nodded and yawned, it was her bed time and Kane knew it without even having to ask.
"Daddy tuck me in too?" She asked her mother before reaching up with her arms for Kane to pick her up. He easy picked her up and she wrapped her arms around his neck.
Aleks laughed at Millie’s excitement. They had already gone shopping for her dress and her shoes and had plenty of practice runs of how she wanted her hair. Each time she fell in love with a new style and changed her mind about what she wanted but luckily Aleks quite enjoyed playing with her hair.
Aleks shook her head and laughed. “I’m sure he’s big enough to dress himself. I don’t need to pick out clothes for him.”
Kane chuckled, "She is... gets that from you... anything you want... you can have." He said looking at her... from head to toe. She hadn't changed a bit. He sighed, "This involves dressing up doesn't it?" Millie nodded, "I get to wear a dress and big girl shoes and get my hair done!" Kane smiled, "Big girl shoes? Thats awesome... what should daddy wear?" He asked kneeling down to her level. She thought for a moment and said, "let mommy pick!"
Aleks looked up the moment Millie ran into the room with the biggest smile she had ever seen. While a part of her wishes she would have waited to ask Kane, she knew that she was just a child and she didn’t understand that she didn’t yet know him very well, she was just excited about finally getting to know her Dad.
“Yes. She is rather good at getting the things she wants. Aren’t you pumpkin?” She asked with a smile and ran her hand through her hair. She looked up at Kane and allowed her eyes to linger for a minute. It was so hard having him here.
Millie hugged Kane, "Will you take me to the daddy daughter dance next week?" She asked him smiling and hopeful and Kane nodded, "Yes princess I will... " Millie ran to her mother, "Momma, Daddy said he will take me to the dance!" Kane stood in the doorway now leaning against the frame, "She asked and I couldn't say no to that face." She had him wrapped around her little finger already.
Aleks needed a breather. She never thought this day would come and it was taking every bit of energy not to simply break down and cry but she wouldn’t do that, at least not until he was gone and Millie was in bed. With a quick glance at the two siting on the sofa she went upstairs to change out of her wet clothes and pulled her hair into a braid.
When she was done Aleks returned to the kitchen to put away the dishes and spent a few minutes wiping down the dining table, ocsssionally looking up at the two conversing. She had to keep telling herself the Millie’s happiness was more important than her pride.
Kane smiled, "Princess come tell me about you." He sat down on the couch and she crawled onto the couch beside him smiling, telling her about her favorite color, purple, and how much she wanted a kitten and a puppy but her mommy wouldn't let her. The last question she asked him, hit him like a ton of bricks, "Your not leaving again are you daddy?" Kane shook his head, "never baby girl."
Aleks listened to every word he said carefully. She had waited so long for him to tell her that he made a mistake but it was coming eight years too late for her.
“You can get to know your daughter but I swear if you break her heart you will be sorry.” Aleks turned when she heard Milllie’s voice. She had returned from getting changed and she had the biggest smile on her face. “Yes she knows about Millie. I asked her not to tell you.”
Aleks took Millie’s hand and crouched down in front of her. “I’m going to get changed myself. I want you to be polite and get to know your Dad a little, alright?”
“When I left I made a mistake and I don’t know what made me leave but that’s why I was a drunk, I’ve been sober for six months now. I knew I couldn’t continue like I was. I’m sorry. I know that doesn’t fix it but I’m not leaving Millie or you anymore and I understand why you didn’t tell me. I’m not mad...just shocked.” Kane said looking to her with his big blue eyes.
“I want to get to know our daughter. I’m off tour. I’m supposed to be writing new music but I need a break and after tonight and meeting Millie I don’t think I want to live in Nashville anymore. Wait...did my mom know about Millie?” He asked. His mother was the best grandma to Millie but had tried to tell him and gotten kicked out of his concert so she was a grandma without him.
