Kane shook his head, tears were pooling his his eyes and threatened to spill over but he held back, he wouldn't cry in front of their daughter. He wanted to point out that they had spent weeks looking for that ring and went all the way to New Orleans to find it... her perfect ring.
He sighed putting it back on the chain around his neck.
She didn't know what to say but apparently Kane did. He had said he loved her before several times but hearing it now she found herself speechless. It had been eight years and he hadn't once tried to contact her. No, she wouldn't allow her feelings to complicate things further.
"I...I don't want it Kane. It never belonged to me. We didn't get married and we won't ever get married. That ring is yours."
Kane sighed, "its complicated princess but I promise you that I love your mommy very much and I love you just as much..." He said kissing her forehead. Kane noticed Aleks seen the wedding ring on his necklace and he took it off... taking the ring off of the chain, "This... it belongs to you."
Millie seemed to distract herself easily but that meant that an awkward silence fell between them now and she found herself wishing that she could just get rid of the feelings and pretend that there had never been anything between them but even catching sight of the ring sitting at his neck made it very hard for her.
"Daddy, I don't understand why you and Mommy are not married like other parents at my school." Millie spoke up and Alek's eyes widened. She had told her that Daddy had important things to do which is why he spent his time away from them but she never told her that he left her on their wedding day.
Kane took a sip of his raspberry sweet tea and watched Millie color her place mat. His phone laid on the table. He had it on silent, he wasn't taking work or personal calls. He was home. This is where he belonged.
Around Kane's neck hung her wedding ring.... he hadn't taken it off in 8 years.
Aleks noticed that he went straight for their regular table, clearly remembering where they used to sit and she sighed to herself as they approached, taking a seat opposite Kane and Millie. Millie was far to excited about the fact that her Dad was here to take her normal place beside her but she did not mind.
When the waitress approached she noticed that Kane said that he wouldn't be leaving and she couldn't help but wonder why she hadn't been enough for him. She would never bring that up now though. They place their order and the waitress left the three of them alone.
Kane walked into the small diner holding Millie's hand. The place hadn't changed one bit in 8 years. Finding their regular table he didn't know that it was her and Millie's table now. The waitress was even the same woman who was shocked to see Kane. "Kane Brown, back in Greenwood, Georgia... I never thought I'd see the day." Kane chuckled, "Back and I'm not leaving." He said sitting in the booth with Millie beside him.
For the rest of the journey Aleks stared out of the window and kept her eyes on the road moving by. By the time they had arrived Kane was making his way around to the other side of the truck and helping her out and when they were all out of the car, Millie took hold of both of their hands.
Most of the people in Georgia already knew that Kane was Millie's father but they would probably be shocked to see him with the two of them, especially since she had always been so adamant that he couldn't know.
Kane chuckled, "Your mom has a lot of songs about her..." Kane sang along with it and Millie tried to sing along with him and it was adorable. By the end of the song Kane had parked at Donnington's.
He went to the passenger's side and helped Aleks out of the truck before unbuckling Millie and sitting her on the ground. She grabbed ahold of his hand and Aleks' at the same time.
"I know, but you did. It doesn't matter now." Aleks swallowed hard when the song came on the radio. She thought that the song had been about someone else, especially since he had been dating a lot of girls back then but when he told her it was about her she blushed. She couldn't say anything.
"Mom! You have a song about you." Millie said excitedly, overhearing Kane and getting really excited when she heard him sing.
"I wouldn't have left...I know that doesn't help now but I just want you to know." he said driving. "So... March 20th.... got it." He glanced back at Millie and turned up the radio a little when one of his songs, Thunder In The Rain, came on the country radio and he looked to Aleks, "I wrote this for you..."
He sang along with the radio, "Your lips.. your eyes... don't wanna let go... your skin ... on mine I'm losing control."
Aleks did not protest when Kane helped her up into the truck, it was simply easier that way and when she was in she turned to look at Millie who was secure in the back and she offered her a smile. Soon enough they were on the road and Millie was singing quietly to herself on the backseat like she always did when they drove to Donningtons.
"She was seven on 20th March." She said as looked over towards him. "I was already two months pregnant by the time you left and I found out a few weeks later."
Kane nodded, "I know darlin'." He opened the passenger's side door and pushed the seat up before lifting Millie up into the lifted pick up truck into the back seat. He made sure she was securely buckled before moving the front seat back into position. Taking Aleks' hand he helped her up too before going to get into his side.
Kane drove to Donnington's like he had every Saturday almost 8 years ago. "When is Millie's birthday?" he asked looking to Aleks.. "I do need to know some things."
"We might as well take your truck since I'm already parked up on the driveway." As she approached the car she heard Kane say that he wanted them both there and before she had a chance to say anything Millie was telling him about the fact that she listened to him all the time. She blushed slightly but nodded, not really addressing it.
"I will have to think about it. We need to see how today goes...how the next few weeks go before we start committing to bigger things. You must understand that this is a big change...for all of us?"
"Thats why I asked, it can get hectic and I don't want her exposed to that either." Kane said holding the little girl's hand and asked, "My truck or your car?"
Kane would be playing the festival then, "Well since I'll play the festival, I want you and Millie there... I mean she doesn't even know what I do... or shes never seen it." Millie spoke up, "I know your job! Mommy listens to you all the time." Kane smiled and turned to Aleks, "You do?"
