[i “If you don’t shut your eyes, I’ll do it for you,”] Storm warned. [i “You’ll so us no good if you’re half asleep. We’ll hear if that door opens.”]
Too tired to argue, Alex let his eyes slip shut into the worst sleep he’d ever had.
Ari twitched and growled slightly in her sleep every once in awhile.
Alex forced himself to stay awake, listening for any sounds of guards coming for them. Every slight whisper of the wind through the barred windows, or scratching of a shoe on the cement as someone shifted in their sleep set him on high alert.
His eyes remained glued to the door, tense and anticipating a face to appear behind the little window at any moment.
Ari slept somewhat soundly and almost inaudibly wheezed from the heavy weight of the collar.
[i "I can hear you thinking from here,"] Michael spoke as Ari fell asleep. [i "Listen to her, Dad. You don't want to make things worse."]
[b "Look where we are, Michael,"] Alex sighed. [b "It can't possibly get worse."]
She shivered slightly and tried to get some kind of sleep.
[b "Whatever it takes to kill every last one of them,"] he closed his eyes and pressed his lips to the back of her neck.
She nodded and sighed. "Alpha will want to come out and take control..."
[b "After all this bullshit, I think everyone will be in fighting shape when the time comes,"] he took in the faces of their friends and allies, full of nothing but furrowed brows and anger in their eyes.
"keep your strength up for the escape...." she said and sighed. "we'll need to fight our way out."
Father and son locked eyes. Alex hated seeing the fear in Michael's face, but he knew that ultimately, it was her decision. [b "We're not happy about it,"] he sighed. [b "But we will follow your orders."]
"No. I know their methods and experiments better than you or your father. If they somehow get bored of me, they will vivisect me over and over again." She said and sighed. "Jasper and the others won't let it get to that point."
[b "It shouldn't be happening at all,"] he spoke through gritted teeth.
[i "He's right, Mom,"] Michael spoke softly. [i "We can't sit here and be complicit in your torture. If you won't let Dad do it, let me. As prince, I need to defend my country just as much as you do. But you are the monarch, not me. Let me take your place."]
She sighed and leaned on him more. "It shouldn't be more than a few days..." She whispered and looked up at him. "At least that's what the professor says..."
He sighed, dropping his forehead to her shoulder. [b "I know you can handle yourself. That's not what this is about. I physically cannot stand the fact that I'm supposed to sit here while you are being tortured by god knows what."]
